DOVER - Last of the 4 semi-finalists who will return to Memorial Hall next weekend to continue the free-for-all to name a new County Class B Basketball Champion will be named tonight when the Strasburg Tigers and Tuscarawas Broncos clash in the feature attraction of a 3-game program which winds up the 1st week of hostilities. Sugarcreek-Shanesville's unbeaten Pirates and Midvale's Blue Devils gained the semi-final round in games played last night. Joining the Port Washington Purple Riders which made the riffle on thursday night by defeating the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 36-31.
Head Coach Earl Sundheimer's Pirates romped over the Mineral City Tigers 77-24 for their 22 straight triumph this season in one of last night's games, while Midvale beat down a stubborn Dundee Bulldogs' five 48-26 in the other regular tournament game. Baltic pulled the prize upset of the tournament thus far by eliminating Gnadenhutten, last year's defending Champions, 43-36, in a Consolation game in which the Eagles' Junior center Max Regula stole the individual limelight by spraying the hoops with 29 points, the best single game effort of any of the contestants.
Regula pitched 14 field goals and a free throw for his 29 points as the Baltic Eagles (1-1) (19-29) upset the Gnadenhutten Indians (0-2) (33-25) (10-12) in the 1st Consolation Division game that see-sawed through all of the first 2 periods and part of the 3rd quarter before the Eagles gained and held the upper hand. Baltic led 12-9 at the end of the 1st quarter, but trailed 23-22 at the half. They moved into a 32-29 command at the 3rd rest period and were never headed. Gnaden's Junior forward Bill Martin sparked his team with 18 points (8 field goals and 2 free throws).
Regula's 29 points was one point short of the tournament record held by Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Harland Sliffe who stuffed in 30 markers. It appears that the individual scoring stats are beginning to rise in 1944 and that it is just a matter of time when this record falls.
