44 - Tusky Defeats Bolivar 48-35 (2-17-44)

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (0-1) (34-25), defending the Eastern District Championship, raced at breakneck speed with the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (19-25) through 3 periods of their game and remained in the ball game up to that stage, but lost out in the final quarter.

The Broncos took a long 16-10 lead in the 1st quarter, but the Cardinals, who are coached by 1st-Year Head Coach Woodie McMasters of Uhrichsville, hit back in the 2nd period and after once trailing 19-10, moved up to within one point of the victors before intermission.  After their poor start Bolivar outscored Tusky 12 to 7 in the 2nd period and thus were on the short end of a 23-22 score at the half.  They were only 3 points behind at the close of the 3rd stanza which ended 31-28.

The Broncos moved away in the stretch, sparked by Junior forward Dick Bonvehio who scored 10 points during the final 8 minutes.  Guard Jim Augsberger hit 12 points (6 field goals) to lead the Bolivar scoring and shared individual honors with Bonvechio.

The Cardinals were outscored only 19 to 16 from the field, but cashed in on only 3 of 20 free throws, while Tuscarawas collected 10 of 16.  Bolivar lost Augsberger on personal fouls in the final period, while the victors lost Junior forward Chuck Lorenz and Minnich, a guard.
