44 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Drops Port 49-31 (2-24-44)









DOVER - Head Coach Earl Sundheimer's Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-0) (37-24) (23-0)outclassed the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-1) (7-27) in all departments from the start, but the Purple Riders put up a scrappy and heated game against the odds and more than once had their rivals looking bad.

The Pirates outscored Port in three of the 4 periods with the Riders gaining an edge in the final half of the 4th quarter when Sundheimer put in a full squad of replacements at the automatic time-out.  The Pirates were leading 45-23 at that stage after holding period-end advantages of 10-5, 27-12 and 39-19.

All of the Swordsmen's starting five scored with Senior forward Warren Craigo topping the others with 13 points picking up game honors.  The other 4, forward Gene Mast dropped in 10 points, guard Ernie Raber swished 11 points, Junior center Bob Lanzer had 8 points and guard Junior Miller claimed 3 points, while substitute Junior forward Bill Neff claimed 4 points.  Senior center Blaine Gilmore headed up the Port Washington scoring with a high of 10 points, while forwards Senior Ray Ludwig and Junior Clarence (Elmer) Linard hit the hoops for anther 8 points each.
