Bolivar Cardinals Senior Forward Warren Klink hit the hoops for 9 points sharing game honors with the Strasburg Tigers' Senior Center Carl Yackey who also dropped in 9 points, lead the Cardinals to a hair victory over the Tigers 24-23. Klink now has 34 points in 2 games for a 17 point average in this year's tournament.
DOVER - Senior forward Warren Klink, a four-year star at the Cardinal School, iced the game for the Bolivar Cardinals (2-0) (33-23) by sinking a free throw in the last 15 seconds to break a 23-23 deadlock. It looked like it would be all Strasburg as the 2 teams played through the 1st quarter and 2nd-Year Head Coach Clayton "Doc" Kessler's Tigers moved out front to an 11-4 edge. But in the 2nd period the Cardinals hit the hoop with amazing accuracy and racked up 12 points, while holding Strasburg to 4 and surged to a 16-15 lead.
Bolivar upped its advantage to 19-15 early in the 3rd period before the Tigers found the hoop, but from there on the race was tighter than olives in a jar. Third-Year Head Coach John Major's Cardinals clung to a 23-20 lead when the 4th period opened and the rivals went 4 full minutes before either scored and then Senior Carl Yackey, Strasburg center, cashed a free throw to bring his team within 2 points of Bolivar.
After the free throw; however, the scoring again lapsed and less than 50 seconds remained when Senior forward Bob Roush of Strasburg let fly with one from the middle of the floor. It parted the nettings beautifully and knotted the count and the game took on the indication of going into overtime. The clock had ground away all the remaining time, but 15 seconds when Roush fouled Klink and the latter stepped up to the free throw line. The crowd roared and screamed a bedlam in his ears, but Klink, All-County player for 4 straight years and All-State at least once, calmly pitched the ball at the hoop. It hit the side, bounced and then settled, falling squarely through.
The shot boosted Klink's scoring total to 9 points for the game and permitted him to share individual scoring honors with Strasburg's Yackey. Each had 3 field goals and 3 free throws.
