42 - Meet The 1943 Midvale Blue Devils
MIDVALE - First-Year Head Coach Walter J. Meade, Dean of Tuscarawas County Class B High School mentors, is directing the destinies of the Midvale Blue Devils this year as successor to Head Coach Clayton (Pete) Wolfe who resigned to enlist in the Navy. Meade, opening his 19th year in the county circuit, moved to Midvale from Port Washington and Gnadenhutten high schools where he coached 7 years in each school.
Coach Meade had but one letterman returning from last year's quintet which won only 7 of 18 games played for a 7-11 record. The lone veteran is 6-foot Sophomore Gene Hawkins (4 points), who won his spurs as a Freshman performer last winter. The Midvale "skipper" was required to build an entire new team around Hawkins and from all indications the squad will be filled with underclassmen. Seven members of the Varsity squad are Sophomores and 2 are Freshmen.
The "A" squad of 10 members includes Hawkins, who is being alternated at center and guard; William Hunter (2 points), a Sophomore, who is also being groomed for center and guard; Sam Booth, a Sophomore forward; Alden Hensel, a Junior guard and Bob Meese, a Senior playing both guard and forward as the occasion demands. Carl Myers and Don Gray, both Seniors and Gilbert Bartels, Jim Phillips and Ray Bellentine, all Sophomores, complete the squad. Leading the imposing array of Freshmen are Dave Stevenson and Leonard Fox.
