43 - Bolivar Gets a Scare From Baltic 44-39 (2-20-43)
DOVER - A 20-point splurge by 1st-Year Head Coach John McCormick's Baltic Eagles (0-1) (18-28) in the 3rd quarter came near to providing the meet with its 1st upset and only the sterling performance of Senior forward Warren Klink saved the day for the favored Bolivar Cardinals (1-0) (32-23) in the Red Birds' 44-39 victory over the Eagles.
With Klink notching 11 of his team's points, the Cardinals forged ahead 13-6 in the 1st period and continued to dominate the scene in the 2nd stanza when they romped to a 26-10 margin. Senior John Young, diminutive Baltic forward, staged a one-man show in the 3rd quarter and potted 4 action shots and 3 free throws for 11 points of his own, to put his team back into the game as Baltic sliced the Bolivar margin to 4 points...34-30.
Bolivar's Klink opened the 4th quarter with a pair of free throws, but Senior center Bob Regula and Junior forward Bob Reidenbach hit free throws and Senior forward John Young potted a fielder from midcourt to bring the Eagle lads to within 2 points of tying the score as the crowd cheered lustily for the underdogs. Baltic rallied later in the game and with 2 minutes to go again reduced their deficit to 41-39, but Klink saved the day with a shot from the pivot and guard Bill Zutavern hit a free throw in the closing seconds. Young's quota of 7 fielders and 4 free tosses gave him runner-up honors with 18 points.
Baltic lost Sophomore center Max Regula on personal fouls at the end of the 3rd period and forward Pepper and Bob Regula in the final minutes, while the Eagles lost center Russ Ross in the early part of the fourth. The teams broke even with 14 field goals, but the Cardinals tallied 16 of 25 free throws, while Baltic notched only 11 of 18.
Klink round up with 25 points picking up game honors, while forward Paul Lab collected 11 more points for Bolivar. Baltic was led by John Young's 18 markers.
