43 - Gnaden Sinks The Pirates 44-37 (2-26-43)

Gnadenhutten Indians Senior Forward Bill Lockett knocks down 17 points while leading the Indians to a 44-37 triumph over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  Lockett has a total of 27 points in two tournament games for a 13.6 average.

DOVER - Head Coach Earl Sundheimer's Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) (35-24) (14-3) might well lay blame for their defeat on the fact that they were unable to find the basket with any degree of success.  While the Pirates bowed to a smooth-working, classy club, they could easily have reversed the decision had a fair percentage of their shots toppled down on the right side of the hoop.  They were plagued throughout the game by their ill luck and the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (32-23) (16-4) lost no time in taking full advantage of the sitution.

The teams see-sawed through the 1st quarter, but Gnaden finally edged out with a 10-8 lead at the rest period.  Slender though the lead was, it seemed all the Redskins needed.  And only once after that did they fail to lead their opponents; although, the scoring was close right up to the final stanza.

In the 2nd quarter the Reds went on to a 14-13 lead, but the Pirates tied it up at 16 and then fell back 2 points at the half which ended with the Redskins leading 18-16.  At the start of the 3rd period of play Sugarcreek-Shanesville bunched 3 points and gained a 19-18 edge, but Gnadenhutten quickly nullified it and then gained the lead again.  This time they never lost it.  They led 29-23 at the end of the 3rd quarter and at one stage in the stretch drive led by 10 points, 37-27 and another time by 13 points, 43-30 before the Pirates rallied and sliced the margin.

Senior Captain Bill "Billy" Lockett, eagle-eyed Gnaden forward, walked off with scoring honors by rattling the boards with 17 points, 8 field goals and a free throw.  Center Junior Trachsel of Sugarcreek-Shanesville came out with runner-up honors with 11 markers and contributed a great floor game.  He had 3 baskets and 5 free throws.  Lockett's teammates, Senior center Ralph Long and Sophomore forward Bill Martin each had 9 points.  Trachsel's mates, Sophomore forward Bill Neff dropped in 9 points, while Junior forward Warren Craigo pushed through 8 points.
