DOVER - Tuscarawas County's Class B High School Basketball League, organized more than a quarter of a century ago, will suspend operations this winter for the 1st time in history because of war-time restrictions on transportation of athletic teams. This was announced today be County School Supt. W.E. Laws following a meeting of the heads of all schools in the 11-team circuit at the county board of education offices in New Philadelphia.
The federal government has issued an order forbidding the use of school buses to transport athletic teams, debating societies and musicians to contests in a move to conserve rubber and gasoline. Suspension of the League will not result in the dropping of the sport; however, since most of the schools will place teams in the field again this winter. Each school will make up its own schedule, booking teams which come from nearby communities. The home teamwill supply preliminary attractions, thus eliminating Reserve games to the Varsity encounters as played in former years.
Special emphasis will be placed on physical education work in all of the schools to condition students for active training when and if 18 and 19 year old boys are drafted for the armed services. The League has also had difficulty securing referees for the winter schedule. Only 6 or 7 officials have expressed interest in working games and most of them could give no assurance that they will be able to fill their officiating engagements when gas rationing becomes effective.
In several instances, County League coaches have conducted investigations to learn if parents of school children will volunteer their cars to transport teams on at least one trip away from home. No report has been made on the surveys. The fate of the Annual County Class B Tournament scheduled for next spring at Dover Memorial Hall is still undecided. No further plans for the meet will be made pending further developments in rationing, Mr. Laws said.
