43 - Friday Night's 2-Game Wrap-up
DOVER - Head Coach John Major's Bolivar Cardinals and Head Coach Ken "Blondie" Gartrell's Gnadenhutten Indians will battle it out at Memorial Hall tonight for the County Class B Basketball Championship. Both teams would make it their 3rd Championship since the beginning in 1923 and if the Redskins win it...it would be their 2nd in a row as they won the title last year.
The 2 teams fought their way to the Championship tilt and at the same time qualified for the Eastern Ohio Sectional Tournament here next week by disposing of semi-final foes before 1,350 fans in tournament play last night. Gnaden conquered the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 44-37 and Red Birds upset the Strasburg Tigers 24-23 in a thrill-packed contest that went undecided until the final 15 seconds of play.
While the Gnadenhutten contest with Sugarcreek-Shanesville lived up to its advance notices as a meeting of the couinty circuit's best 2 combines, Bolivar and Strasburg completely stole the show with their dog-eat-dog competition that easily topped anything the tournament has shown thus far and the Cardinals' victory gave Bolivar a 2-1 edge in games on Strasburg this season.
