43 - Bolivar Drops Hopewell 32-26 (3-12-43)
Bolivar Cardinals Senior Forward Warren Klink poured in 19 points gathering game honors and leading the Cardinals to a win over the Hopewell Tornadoes 32-26. Warren has amassed 104 points in 6 contests of tournament play for an average of 17.3 points per game.
DENNISON - An all Tuscarawas County final for the Eastern Ohio District Basketball Tournament will come off at Dennison tonight, the 1st such event since 1939 when the Dennison Railroaders and Strasburg Tigers squared-off with the Railroaders winning going away 47-34. Head Coach John Major's Bolivar Cardinals (5-1) (16-9) ousted the Hopewell Tornadoes of Muskingum County 32-26 before a crowd of nearly 1,200 at Dennison's High School Gym in a semi-final game. Bolivar had a bit of difficulty with a smooth-working Hopewell combination that fought to the bitter end against a Cardinal quintet that was far from the top condition it showed in the county tournament.
Coach Major's Red Birds from Bolivar placed their usual dependence on Senior forward ace Warren Klink and center Russ Ross, but it remained for guard Jim Augsberger, punching in 3 buckets in the 3rd quarter, to furnish the spark when most needed for the Cardinals to down the Muskingum County combine. Klink cameout with 19 points (6 field goals and 7 free throws), for individual honors and Augsberger's 3rd period push netted him 8 markers. Forward Dick Hupp paced Hopewell with 12 points (6 field goals).
Bolivar led 9-7, 14-11 and 22-18 at the period ends as the flatfooted Hopewell offense fell apart at the seams against the Cardinal zone defense and the Blue Tornadoes dropped out of the race in the last 4 minutes when Bolivar forged ahead to a 28-26 lead. Four times in those last 4 minutes Hopewell elected to take the ball instead of a free throw, but every time the effort proved futile and the Tornadoes went scoreless through the last half of the final quarter.
