33 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Noses Out Freeport 31-26 (3-3-33)

DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-1) turned back the Freeport Raiders' driving crew, big center and all, last night in the 2nd game of the tourney session, by a 31-26 score to earn the right to mix things up with the Dennison Railroaders today in the Eastern Ohio Sectional Finals.

The Pirates, playing against a looser Freeport outfit than the one who nosed out Walnut Creek in the opening round, did not have the ball game their own way at any time and only in the last minutes of the 4th quarter did they cinch victory, while they stalled against the losers' 5-man defense.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville led in the 1st quarter 13-12, held a 6 point lead, 21-15, at the half, while Freeport led at the end of the 3rd quarter 25-24.  Forward Boyd "Doc" Burkey, passing well and hanging up 12 points, center Harold Logsdon holding and out-jumping big-boy Fulton and guard Don Norris, also ringing up 12 markers, looked good individually.  Freeport was led by forward Kinsey with 3 field goals and 3 free throws for 9 points.
