33 - All-Tournament Honors 1933

Third year Head Coach Roy M. Roby led the Strasburg Tigers who were Champions of the League and County Tournament for the last 2 years straight.

DOVER - Strasburg High School's basketball team captured its 5th county tournament championship at Legion Hall Saturday night by defeating the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 38-25 at the close of a thrilling 3-day meet.  The team this year completed its 3rd season of undefeated ball in the County League competition and pushed a consecutive string of League victories to 29.  The members of the successful team:  Junior Elwyn Rieger - guard, Junior John "Johnny" Studer - forward, Sophomore George Denzer - center, Sophomore Bill Haas - forward, Senior Bill Jones - guard, Sophomore Jim Dreher - forward, Senior Foster Peters - guard, Golden - center, Senior Fred Schenk - guard, Sophomore Adrian Miller - forward and Senior Lewis H. Huth - Student Manager.

The most-outstanding candidate for The Daily Reporter's  All-Tournament Team was Don Norris, Sugarcreek-Shanesville guard.  Last year Norris only "made" the squad.  He was not a regular player and did not rate a suit when that team went to the State Tournament.  During the past year he has according to Sugarcreek-Shanesville followers, "grown like a weed" and his basketball abililty has enlarged proportionately.  In the tournament just past he led the entire field in scoring with 24 field goal baskets and 7 fouls to his credit for a total of 55 points....an average of 13.8 points per game.  Meanwhile all the forwards he guarded collected only 8 baskets and 5 foul shots for a total of 21 points.

Senior Boyd "Doc" Burkey and John Studer, both high scorers and floormen with a keen basketball sense, stood out easily above the forwards for the 1st selections.  Both assumed the position of field marshall for their respective teams,  although guard Bill Jones captained Strasburg in the final.

Greatest lack of material for all-tournament selections was at the center positions.  Both pivot players of Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville stood head and shoulders above the remainder, while  Senior Dennis Richardson of Baltic might be considered the 3rd best.

Picking Bill Jones for a guard position opposite Don Norris was as easy as picking Norris.  His game against Sugarcreek-Shanesville in the final was one of the brightest spots of the meeting.
