Strasburg Tigers 1933 League and Tournament Champions. Head Coach Paul M. Roby, George Denzer, Jim Dreher, Golden, Bill Haas, Bill Jones, Adrian Miller, Foster Peters, Elwyn Rieger, Fred Schenk and John "Johnny" Studer.
DOVER - Unleasing the same fierce attack that carried it undefeated through 3 successive League seasons, the Strasburg Tigers (3-0) (25-5) whose basketball team on Saturday night won the tournament championship of the Tuscarawas County Class B school systems, defeated its ancient rival, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-1) (13-8), by a score of 38-25. The victory gave Strasburg its 2nd consecutive Championship in both the county League and the county Tournament.
Played at Legion Hall, the final game drew a crowd of nearly 1,500 persons, the largest of the 3-day session and one that filled the large hall to capacity. As a result of the game and the tournament, Strasburg, Sugarcreek-Shanesville and the Dundee Bulldogs will represent the county system in the Ohio Eastern Sectional Tournament of the Eastern Ohio District at Legion Hall this weekend. Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville because they were finalist in this tourney and Dundee because it had the highest League standing of the tournament defeated teams.
Traveling the long way, Sugarcreek-Shanesville reached the finals by defeating the Stone Creek Panthers, Dundee and the Baltic Eagles. Strasburg, which drew a bye in the 1st round, defeated the Port Washington Purple Riders and the Bolivar Cardinals to reach the peak.
With their combination clicking at high speed the Tigers took an early lead in the final game and marched without faltering to victory. They led every step of the way after the 1st five minutes. Junior guard Elwyn Rieger opened the scoring with a field goal in those early minutes, but forward Boyd "Doc" Burkey dropped a long one through the netting to tie the count. Senior guard Bill Jones scored from afield for the Burgermen, while guard Miller of the Pirates tallied a free throw. Center Harold Logsdon followed through on the 2nd of Miller's free tosses, which missed and scored a bucket which gave the Creekers their only lead with the score 5-4. Junior forward John "Johnny" Studer tied the count with a foul and then Jones' next bucket gave the Burgers the lead they never lost.
Sugarcreek's shooting eyes, the marvel of the early tournament were off form for the final and added to the deficiency was their utter failure to follow-up their shots or to attempt to hawk the ball under the bankboard. That last problem had much to do with the great difference in the score. Strasburg, controlling the ball the majority of the time throughout the game, led 8-5 at the end of the quarter and 17-14 at halftime. They increased their 3-point advantage to one of 7 in the 3rd period...which ended with Strasburg leading 29-22...and then almost doubled in the final session during which they counted 9 points to Sugarcreek-Shanesville's three.
Two men were banished from the game on personal fouls. Sophomore forward Bill Haas of Strasburg and guard Norris of the Pirates, both went out in the 4th quarter. Studer, Tiger ace, carried off scoring honors with 12 points scored on 5 field goals and 2 free throws. Jones, of Strasburg, was 2nd high with 11 tallies collected on 5 buckets and a foul shot. Burkey found the hoop 4 times from action and twice from the free-line to lead his team with 10 points. Burkey really potted 3 free throws, but the 3rd was voided because he stepped over the line shooting it. Guard Don Norris was 2nd high for the Pirates with 9 points off 3 field goals and 3 free tosses.
