33 - Strasburg Outlasts Newcomerstown 31-23 (3-5-33)
DOVER - Strasburg, Dennison, Coshocton Sacred Heart and Amsterdam High Schools will represent the Eastern Ohio District at the District Basketball Tournament at Dennison on Friday and Saturday as a result of play-offs at Legion Hall Saturday. Strasburg, Champions of Tuscarawas County, defeated Newcomerstown 31-23; Dennison eliminated Sugarcreek-Shanesville 33-29 in overtime; Sacred Heart defeated Dover St. Joseph's 27-24 and Amsterdam downed Cadiz 32-26.
The Strasburg Tigers (5-0) was easily the outstanding team of the day's play; although, the Dennison Railroaders furnished the nearest to an upset by its elimination of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates. Junior forward John "Johnny" Studer, one of the county's outstanding players...Class A or B...led the Tigers to the kill. He accounted for 20 of the winners' points, pouring 16 of them through the nettings in the last half. The Newcomerstown Trojans, the county's rangiest team, were quite unable to cope with the situation presented by Mr. Studer. Strasburg was only mediocre through the 1st half; although, leading 7-4 at the quarter and 13-10 at the half. In the 3rd period they opened the barrage and netted 13 points to their opponents' 7 to hold a 26-17 lead as the final quarter started.
The Trojans made a strong bid for supremacy in the 4th period, when they outscored the Tigers 7 to 5, but the Champions held tightly to the winning lead. Senior guard Bill Jones, counted 2 fielders and a free throw for 5 points to follow Studer in Strasburg's scoring. Forward McElhaney of Newcomerstown, led the Trojans with 8 points...3 field goals and a foul toss.
