33 - Strasburg Goes Down In Flames 28-20 (3-17-33)
COLUMBUS - The long victory march of the Strasburg Tigers (8-1), Class B Basketball Champions of Eastern Ohio, was halted here last night by the Lancaster St. Mary's Saints which decisioned the Tigers 28-20 before some 4,000 spectators. Strasburg can charge its loss directly to lack of an even chance to control the tip-off. The Tigers played the floor on even terms with the Lancaster club, but were kept at a decided disadvantage by Lancaster's continual possession of the ball at the tip-off.
With some 4,000 fans cheering them on, the Tigers took a 3-2 lead early in lthe 1st period and held it through the late minutes of the second quarter. There they lost it and trailed the remainder of the game. The 1st period ended 7-5 Strasburg, but in the period it was 10-8 in Lancaster's favor and the Green shirted boys were ahead 20-13 as the final period opened. A desperate rally on the part of Strasburg failed in the final stanza. Forward Sullivan of Lancaster opened the scoring with a long shot for 2 points. Tiger senior guard and Captain Bill Jones missed 1 of 2 free throws and then sophomore George Denzer, Strasburg center, dribbled under the basket for a sucker shot to put the Tuscarawas County Champions in front. With the count 3-2, Junior forward John "Johnny" Studer slipped under the bucket for a sucker and then sank 2 foul tosses to drive the score to 7-2 in Strasburg's favor. In the late minutes of the quarter guard Blair of Lancaster shot a field goal and Sullivan dumped in a free throw.
Strasburg counted only 1 point in the entire 2nd period...a foul shot by Junior guard Elwyn Rieger. The little guard also missed 2 of the free throw chances offered him. Jones also missed a free throw. Lancaster counted 5 points, baskets by Blair and guard Thesing and a free throw by forward Fey. The superior height of the Lancaster team began to exact its greatest toll in the 3rd period when they maneuvered block after block to score 5 buckets on passes from the pivot man. Strasburg counted 5 points. Forward Abbott, an uncanny shot and star of the Lancaster team, opened the period with a bucket. Denzer dribbled under the bucket to score for Strasburg. Then Sullivan repeated Abbott's trick. Studer dropped a free throw cleanly through the netings before center Red Sheridan and Sullivan scored 3 in rapid succession, the latter getting two. With the score 20-11, Studer closed the quarter with a basket for Strasburg.
Strasburg threw its usual caution to the wind for the 4th period and kept the game skimming along at a lightning pace. After Abbott scored from a field goal, Denzer and Reiger counted fouls. Sophomore forward Bill Haas, who became a 4th period hero, dropped the 1st of 2 menacing shots through the hoop. Abbott sank a foul and then Haas took his 2nd bucket, but the points were offset by Abbott's falling into a "sleeper." Red Sheridan blasted one in from the pivot and Studer made good on 1 of 2 free throws as the game ended. The Tigers played their usual cool, slow and deliberate game, never becoming excited, despite the tremendous crowd. Their play quickly won the sympathly of the stands and the spectators rooted for them continuously. John Studer led the Tigers in scoring with 8 points counted on 2 field goals and 4 free throws. He was the 2nd highest scorer to Sullivan of Lancaster, who gathered 9 points with 4 field goals and 1 free throw. Bill Haas of Strasburg had 4 points on 2 baskets and George Denzer, Orange and Black center, had 5, scored on 2 field goals and a foul shot.
Denzer's performance was one of the best he has given this season. Although his stature robbed him of an even chance within the center circle, he gave the highly touted Red Sheridan a full evening. Studer's floor play was also outstanding, but the Lancaster team was fully armed for him and kept him covered like a manhole. Haas gave the crowd its biggest thrill of the game in a bid to start an unstoppable rally when he dumped in 2 buckets in the 4th period. Both Reiger and Jones at guards gave good accounts of themselves.

33 - Strasburg Tigers Face Tough Team In Saints
DOVER - Lancaster St. Mary's Saints, the Class B opponent drawn by the Strasburg Tigers for its 1st game in the State High School Basketball Tournament at Columbus Friday, won 7 of 11 games, during the regular season. When said in just so many words, it doesn't sound a bit threatening, but included in the Saints' schedule, Dayton Stivers, Columbus Central, Cincinnati Purcell, Columbus East, Chillicothe and Pomeroy...and then it becomes something else again. Those schools and the St. Mary's alumni are the teams that have succeeded in reversing the Strasburg opponents.
In their own class, the Saints won 5 successive games to win the title of the Central District. Caledonia, Pleasant Township, Ashville, Brown and Ostrander fell before their attack in the tournament. Ostrander was a finalist at last year's State Tournament. The Saints themselves copped the State banner in 1930. While this year's team is not up to the standard of the championship club, it is exceptionally strong and will force Strasburg to the limit if the Tuscarawas County team is to emerge victorious.
A good basketball team that has lost games is one that will not become excited because the score is not in their favor and that is a big factor in tournament play. Lancaster is that way, but the long suit of the Roby-coached Eastern District Champions also happens to be coolness under fire. Head Coach Paul M Roby's Strasburg Tigers in their District performances stood out remarkably for their cool headedness when behind in the scoring. Never panicky, they came from behind in their 2 hardest games.
John "Johnny" Studer, the ace scorer of all Tuscarawas County Class B teams, will find himself pitted against the Saints' Blair, the only Lancaster man to make the Central District All-Tournament team. George Denzer, 2nd Tiger to make the all Eastern District Tournament team, will jump at center against R. Sheridan, classy pivot man who has caused trouble for every center he has played against this year. Other members of the Saints' team are Sullivan, P. Sheridan and Hutchinson. The latter is considered one of the classiest forwards in the District and averages better than 12 points per game...which puts him on a par with Studer.
Many Strasburg supporters plan to follow their team to the Columbus meet and Patrick Joseph Dunn, Tuscarawas County's State Representative, will be a member of the official reception committee. Pat cracked before the District Tournament, that if the Strasburg team reached the State Tournament, he would stand treat to a big dinner...Coach Roby said this morning that the boys are on the verge of a feast. They will leave for Columbus tomorrow morning at 8AM in private cars and will stop at the Port Hayes Hotel. Their game with the Lancaster Saints is the 1st on the Friday evening program and starts at 6:30PM.

33 - Head Coach Paul M. Roby, Strasburg Tigers, Specializes In Champions
DENNISON - Winning basketball championships is nothing new for Head Coach Paul M. Roby of Strasburg even though this is his 1st Eastern Ohio District Crown. Coach Roby's record as a coach in the County Class B School System fairly reek with Champions. After leaving the Head Coach position with the Midvale Blue Devils, he moved on to coach for the Strasburg Tigers where he has won the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball League for 3 straight years (without a single loss) and bids well to repeat next season. This year Coach Roby won the County League race and successfully defended Strasburg's title against the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates in the Tuscarawas County Tournament and now cops the District Title.
Last year, Roby and his Tiger Team galloped through the League season and then captured the honors at the Tuscarawas County Tournament, but were beaten in the District final by the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates. His chances are exceptional for next year. Out of his lineup Saturday night...John Studer, Bill Haas, George Denzer and Elwyn Reiger will return to play another season. He loses only Captain Bill Jones and Fred Schenk, utility man.

33 - Strasburg Tigers Are The 1933 District Champions (3-11-33)
Here is the Class B team of the Eastern Ohio High School District...Strasburg Tigers. Strasburg won the District Title and the right to participate in the Saste Tournament at Columbus by defeating Dennison 27-18 in the District finals at Dennison on Saturday night. Team Members: Junior Elwyan Rieger - Guard, Junior John "Johnny" Studer - Forward, Sophomore George Denzer - Center, Sophomore Bill "Doddles" Haas - Forward, Senior Captain Bill Jones - Guard, Sophomore Jim Dreher - Forward, Senior Foster Peters - Guard, Golden - Center, Senior Fred Schenk - Guard, Sophomore Adrian "Fuzz" Miller - Forward, Huth - Student Manager and Head Coach Paul M. Roby.
DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers (8-0) had to overcome an 8-point lead before it could play in the same game with Dennison which shot from the starting whistle to the long end of a 9-2 count in the 1st period of the Class B final. Strasburg's only counters were free throws by John Studer and Bill Jones. With cold calculation seldom seen outside of an adding machine, the Tigers began a systematic pilfering of the Railroaders' lead in the 2nd period. With their offensive thunder stolen, Dennison annexed only 1 point in the period, while Strasburg completed its job of looting and stepped out front with an 11-10 count at halftime.
Dennison's forward, Cryder, tied the count as the 3rd period opened and again at 13-13 a moment later. But, a bucket and a free toss by Studer put the Tigers out front to stay. The foul was called on Bente, Railroaders' guard. Dennison's hope of stopping Studer was the one that banished him from the game. Six to 5 the Tigers outscored the Railroaders in the final stanza. Studer carried off scoring honors with 13 points on 5 field goals and 3 free throws...and he missed 7 free tosses. Bridgeman, Dennison center, whose sharp-shooting pulled the Railroaders out of several tournament holes, was high for his club with seven. Bill Haas, George Denzer and Jones of Strasburg each scored 4 points, while Elwyn Rieger of the same team made two. The play of Studer and Bridgeman stood out through the entire tournament. Forward Carnahan was 2nd high for Dennison with 4 markers, while Cryder and Zimmerman each had 3 and Bente 1 to finish off the scoring for Dennison.

33 - Strasburg Gets By Byesville 25-18 (3-10-33)
DENNISON - It's too bad that 2 such teams as the Strasburg Tigers (6-0) and the Byesville Colts had to meet in the 1st round of the tournament. The game the 2 played last night can easily be put down as one of the best 3 or 4, that have been played in Tuscarawas County this season. Playing steady, smooth and cooly, the teams went through the 1st three periods on even footing and when they started into the last canto, Byesville led by 1 point with the score 18-17.
The score was tied 5-5 at the close of the 1st period and at 12-12 at halftime. Early in the 3rd period, the Colts splurted to the front and at one time had the Tigers on the short end of an 18-12 count. Strasburg rallied to close the gap. All the fine defensive ball both teams played in the 3 first periods and it was exceptional, was completely eclipsed by the performance of the Champion Tigers in the 4th period when they held Byesville scoreless, while adding 8 points to their own score. John "Johnny" Studer, ace forward of Strasburg, was high scorer with 10 points counted on 4 field goals and 2 free throws. Droltz, Colt guard and worthy foe of any Class A player, was 2nd high with eight.

33 - Strasburg Outlasts Newcomerstown 31-23 (3-5-33)
DOVER - Strasburg, Dennison, Coshocton Sacred Heart and Amsterdam High Schools will represent the Eastern Ohio District at the District Basketball Tournament at Dennison on Friday and Saturday as a result of play-offs at Legion Hall Saturday. Strasburg, Champions of Tuscarawas County, defeated Newcomerstown 31-23; Dennison eliminated Sugarcreek-Shanesville 33-29 in overtime; Sacred Heart defeated Dover St. Joseph's 27-24 and Amsterdam downed Cadiz 32-26.
The Strasburg Tigers (5-0) was easily the outstanding team of the day's play; although, the Dennison Railroaders furnished the nearest to an upset by its elimination of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates. Junior forward John "Johnny" Studer, one of the county's outstanding players...Class A or B...led the Tigers to the kill. He accounted for 20 of the winners' points, pouring 16 of them through the nettings in the last half. The Newcomerstown Trojans, the county's rangiest team, were quite unable to cope with the situation presented by Mr. Studer. Strasburg was only mediocre through the 1st half; although, leading 7-4 at the quarter and 13-10 at the half. In the 3rd period they opened the barrage and netted 13 points to their opponents' 7 to hold a 26-17 lead as the final quarter started.
The Trojans made a strong bid for supremacy in the 4th period, when they outscored the Tigers 7 to 5, but the Champions held tightly to the winning lead. Senior guard Bill Jones, counted 2 fielders and a free throw for 5 points to follow Studer in Strasburg's scoring. Forward McElhaney of Newcomerstown, led the Trojans with 8 points...3 field goals and a foul toss.
