Senior Center Dan Lechner of the Mineral City Tigers scored 22 points while leading his team to victory over the Glenmont Vikings 57-40. Lechner has a total of 75 markers in tournament play for an 18.8 points per game average.
DOVER - The Magnolia's Panthers (23-5) loomed today as stern opposition for the favored Walnut Creek Cardinals (23-0) in the lower bracket of the Class B Sectional Tournament following the Panthers' decisive 59-46 victory over the Dennison Railroaders (8-10) on Wednesday night at Memorial Hall before a crowd of 1,000 fans. The Red Birds must; however, eliminate the Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers (7-12) tonight at 8:30PM in Memorial Hall before gaining a berth in the Saturday night qualifying round and Magnolia must dispose of a Dennison St. Mary's Blue Waves (15-5) threat on Friday before reaching the playoff battle.
In the other 1st round game last night, favored Mineral City Tigers romped over the Glenmont Vikings Holmes County runner-up, 57-40 and will face the Millersburg Knights Friday night. The fare at tonight's round is rich and is expected to draw a near-capacity house.
In addition to the 1st appearance of the Cardinals in Dover this year, Midvale's powerful Blue Devils, defending District Champions, collide with Head Coach Bill Ortt's speedy Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, county Consolation Division winners tonight at 7:30PM.
Sparked by the brilliant shooting of Senior center Dan Lechner, the Mineral City Tigers (3-1) (20-4) had little difficulty with the Glenmont Vikings (20-6) after the 1st period of play. The Tigers held a 16-10 1st quarter edge, but steadily increased this to 41-30 going into the final canto.
Lechner tallied 22 points for the Tigers, while his mate, Senior forward Dick Lindsay, netted 14 markers. Wilson of Glenmont was high scorer for the Vikings.
Although the Walnut Creek Cardinals and Midvale Blue Devils will be favored tonight, the Ramblers of Dover St. Joseph's and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates are set to make a battle of it. Head Coach Jack Castignola whose Ramblers have been improving recently, will concentrate on the Cardinals' Lowell Zook, Dick Hostetler and Bob Troyer.
The scoring of this trio has carried the Red Birds to the top in Class B circles. The Ramblers dropped a regular season decision to the Cardinals at Walnut Creek. Seeking revenge for a 46-36 setback at Sugarcreek-Shanesville earlier in the year, the Orttmen will attempt one of the year's biggest upsets against heavily favored Midvale tonight.
Fast and speedy, the Bucs lack the height necessary to combat Blue Devils skill under the boards, but Junior guards Glen Zimmerman and Jim Knox and Senior forward Clayton Deetz give Ortt a set shot trio which may cause Midvale anxious moments. Doors will open at 6:30PM for tonight's session, Tournament Manager Don Campbell announced.

NOTE: RIGHT DOWN THE LINE WITH REX RIDENOUR
THERE WAS A POSSIBLITY today that the 2 county tournament finalists, Midvale and Mineral City, might meet again in the qualifying round of the Sectional Tournament at Memorial Hall Saturday night. The Tigers having already beaten Glenmont, must yet oust the Millersburg Knights Friday before reaching the last round, while Midvale can gain a berth in the qualifier by defeating Sugarcreek-Shanesville tonight.
The Sectional program tonight will feature 2 games, both with drawing power. The Midvale-Pirate engagement is a resumption of county League warfare and might develop into a slam-bang battle if Head Coach Bill Ortt's speedy "minute men" can find the range at Memorial Hall.
Wanut Creek's Cardinals make their Dover debut tonight against Head Coach Jack Castignola's Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers in an 8:30PM feature which might turn into a closer engagement than is expected. The Cardinals will be seeking victory number 24.
