Guard Chuck Tawney, Bolivar Cardinals ace, nets 2 points against the favored Gnadenhutten Indians last tnight in the Class B Tournament, while defenders Sophomore guard Ron Kohl (12), Junior guard Ted Lawver (6), Senior forward Dick Frey (5) and Senior center Gene Montague (11), stands helplessly by. Gnaden finally emerged a 63-53 winner after one of the outstanding battles of the meet.
Gnadenhutten Indians 2-year Head Coach Ray Blickensderfer guided the Indians to an 11-9 season and is planning on a good show, if not a Championship Trophy, in the finals this year.
The Gnadenhutten Indians cheerleaders of 1949 are Sophomore Sue Roche, Junior Betty Rankin and Junior Jean Crouse.
Gnadenhutten Indians Senior Forward Jim Lindon led the Indians to a satisfying 63-53 win over the Bolivar Cardinals, who had already picked up a tournament victory over the Bulldogs of Dundee 32-25. Lindon collected 25 points in his 1st tourney appearance.
DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers, defending Champions and the Midvale Blue Devils were set to take the stage in the county tournament's feature battle tonight at 9PM at Dennison after the Bolivar's Cardinals came winging out of the depths of the County League's 2nd division last night to nearly forge a major upset over seeded Gnadenhutten. The rangy Indians finally managed to squeeze out a 63-53 victory in the final canto, but not before the aroused Cards, playing without Head Coach Warren Craigo, had thrilled a small crowd of 558 fans as they forced the favored Braves to the limit.
The seeded Mineral City Tigers, exhibiting class and scoring ability, made their 1st appearance last night and trounced a battling Baltic Eagles quintet 67-37 in the only other game on the schedule. Strasburg, a two-time loser to Midvale during the regular season, will make its 3rd bid to dethrone the Blue Devils tonight. Head Coach Don Martin's Bengals reached tonight's round by eliminating the Port Washington Purple Riders 42-39 Wednesday. Midvale will be making its 1st tournament appearance. The Stone Creek Golden Panthers will meet Baltic at 7:45PM and Dundee will collide with Port Washington at 6:30PM in a pair of Consolation Division games tonight.
Unimpressive in their victory over Dundee Wednesday, the Bolivar Cardinals (1-1) (7-14) (40-35), led by a pair of brilliant performers, guard Chuck Tawney and Senior forward Dallas Seward, came back last night to provide one of the tournament's top thrills. Playing steady, fast-breaking basketball, the Red Birds molded 1st and 2nd quarter leads of 13-12 and 27-26. Going into the final stretch, the Cards trailed only 42-36 and it required every inch of height advantage held by the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (12-9) (42-33). The scoring of 6-2 Senior forward Jim Lindon and Senior center Gene Montague managed to pull the game out of the fire for Gnaden.
Seward and Tawney paced Bolivar to that 1st quarter lead and continued their torrid performance in the 2nd period. At one point in the 2nd stanza, a set shot from mid-court by Sophomore forward Bill Willard gave the Cardinals a 21-15 lead. Near the close of the half, Jerry Virtue put the Tribe ahded 26-25 with a layup, but Tawney banged a field goal through the nets in the closing seconds of play to return the lead to Bolivar.
Lindon and Montague, both well over the 6 foot mark, forged an Indian lead in the 3rd period; although, the backboard play of Seward and Junior center Maurice Lundenberger kept the shorter Cardinals in the game. It was Lindon's 5 field goals, all scored under the nets, that spelled disaster for the courageous Red Birds in the last canto. Even then, they made a bid with Sewards' 4 doubledeckers and Tawney's 3 nearly matching Lindon's effort.
Lindon led all scorers with 25 points, while teammate Montague was netting 22. Seward poured 21 through the nets and Tawney 18 points in a losing cause.
Gnadnenhutten had beaten Bolivar earlier in the season...62-57.
