DENNISON - The 2 Sectional Basketball powers, the Midvale Blue Devils and Walnut Creek's Cardinals, were seeded opposite each other in drawings held Sunday afternoon in the Dover High School building for position in the Class B Sectional Tournament which opens Wednesday night in Memorial Hall. While the 2 teams mark time until play begins this week, Midvale was celebrating their triumph of the Mineral City Tigers in the finals of the Class B Tournament at Dennison before a crowd of 1,662 fans.
The Blue Devils were nearly invincible as they trounced a bewildered Mineral City quintet 60-39 to win The Daily Reporter Tournament Trophy and replaced the Strasburg Tigers in the title role. The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates became the 3rd county League represenative in the Sectional meet by edging the Gnadenhutten Indians 39-38 in a torrid Consolation Division battle.
Other teams in the Dover Tournament will be the 3 Tuscaraawas County Independents, Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers - Dennison St. Mary's Blue Waves and the Dennison Railroaders as well as the Glenmont Knights of Holmes County who were runner-up and the Millersburg Knights of Holmes County...Independents and the Magnolia Panthers of Carroll County, Champions.
Walnut Creek's unbeaten Cardinals (23-0), one of the State's few undefeated teams will make their 1st tournament appearance Thursday against Head Coach Jack Castignola's Dover St. Joseph's (7-12). Midvale (22-1), the other seeded team in the meet, will meet the Tuscarawas County Consolation Division winner, Sugarcreek-Shanesville (19-5), also on Thursday. Mineral City (19-4), county runner-up, plays Glenmont (20-4) Wednesday in the 1st game of the tournament, while Dennison (8-9) meets Magnolia (22-5) on Wednesday.
The Midvale Blue Devils (3-0) (22-1) (47-24), which reached the finals of the county tournament by defeating the Strasburg Tigers 49-40 and then edging the Gnadenhutten Indians 39-36, raced to victory with comparative ease on Saturday night against the Mineral City Tigers (2-1) (19-4) (12-39), 46-41 conqueror of Sugarcreek-Shanesville in the semi-finals.
With All-County Senior forward Jack Ford, 6-4 Junior center Bob Sherrell and Dave Rennicker hitting the nets with deadly consistency, the District Champions forged quarter leads of 18-8, 30-16 and 45-27. Early in the 1st quarter, the Blue Devils of Head Coach Bill French piled up a 7-0 margin and continued to add to this total as the Championship battle progressed.
Mineral City, unable to move the ball into the keyhole slot against the tight Midvale defense, never threatened the Blue Devil lead. Against Midvale's smooth-passing attack, the Bengals failed to exhibit the finesse which felled the Corsairs on Wednesday night.
Ford led both teams in scoring with 17 points, while Sherrell collected 13 for the Blue Devils. Six-two Senior center Dan Lechner, one of the tournament's outstanding performers even in defeat, notched 13 for the Bengals.
