49 - It's Sugarcreek-Shanesville By A Point...39-38! (2-26-49)

DENNISON - The Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament's 15th Annual Consolation Division Championship was a thriller of a contest when the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-1) (19-5) (52-30), for the 2nd time in a row, captured the title by eking out a 39-38 battle over the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-2) (13-11) (43-35), who maintained the pace with the Pirates by staging a nip-and-tuck duel into the final seconds of the game.

Second-Year Head Coach Ray Blickensderfer's Braves, one of the League's highest scoring quintets this year, nearly provided the tournament's major upset on Wednesday against the Midvale Blue Devils 39-36 and came right back Saturday to give another fine exhibition.  The battle was a scoring duel between the Tribes' 6-2 Senior forward Jim Lindon and the Corsairs' Junior guards Glen Zimmerman and Jim Knox.

After the 4th canto had see-sawed back and forth for 5 minutes, Lindon meshed a field goal that put Gnaden in the lead 36-35.  Zimmerman countered with a set shot which sent the Pirates into a 37-36 lead at the automatic time-out period and Senior center John Andreas scored the winning points for the Orttmen just after play was resumed again, a set shot from the side.

Senior guard Dick Frey trimmed the Bucs' margin to 39-37 with a free throw shot and set the stage for a dramatic finish.  With 6 seconds remaining, Knox fouled Lindon as the brilliant Indian pivot man drove in for a lay-up attempt.  Referee Vally Dirodis awarded Jim 2 free throw tosses and a chance to knot the count.

Lindon, facing what was undoubtedly the tournament's most severe pressure point, sunk his 1st shot, but missed the 2nd attempt, giving Sugarcreek-Shanesville the victory.

Game honors went to Lindon who paced both teams with 24 points, while Knox notched 18 and Zimmerman netted 15.
