40 - Tusky Sends The Indians To The Reservation 32-23 (2-17-40)
Tuscarawas Broncos #6 Junior Guard Lester Meese gains game honors by scoring 10 points (3 field goals and 4 free throws) while leading the Broncos to victory over the Gnadenhutten Indians by a score of 32-23. Meese is averaging 7.5 points a game for Tusky.
DOVER - Featured by a sparkling upset of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates by the Baltic Eagles on Saturday afternoon, the 18th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament today turned into a fight between Baltic, Midvale Blue Devils, Strasburg Tigers and Tuscarawas for the Championship after the Friday and Saturday sessions of 10 games at Memorial Hall saw 2 of the 3 regular season co-winners dropped into the Consolation Division.
Baltic staged a last-period rally to drop Sugarcreek-Shanesville 27-23 and Midvale swept over the Dundee Bulldogs 50-22 in the afternoon games, while Tusky took the Gnadenhutten Indians into camp 32-23 in the only regular tournament game played in the evening. Only small crowds were present at the sessions.
Midvale, which tied for the League Pennant along with the Bolivar Cardinals and Sugarcreek-Shanesville, today were tournament favorites as a result of piling up 110 points in 2 appearances and are favored to defeat Tuscarawas in the semi-finals on Friday night at 10PM.
Charmis Davis, in his 12th year as head coach of the Broncos (2-0) (15-19), showed vast improvement over their Friday night game when they recovered in time to escape a big upset at the hands of the Mineral City Tigers, put on a big 2nd-half drive and free throw shooting exhibition to edge the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-1) (21-22) 32-23 in an evening game.
The teams wer tied 5-5 at the end of the 1st period, but Tusky took a 14-13 lead at halftime, built it up to 25-19 at the 3rd quarter and then went on to win going away as personal fouls chased 2 Indian regulars to the showers.
Meese led the Tusky cagers in scoring with 10 points, while #10 Sophomore Center John Metzger was high for Gnaden with 7 markers. The Broncos made 14 of 18 free throws, while the Indians scored only 7 of 18. Metzger and #5 guard Earl Johnson hit the showers as 16 personals were called on Gnadenhutten, while Tuscarawas failed to lose a single player.
