40 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Takes-Out Dundee 27-18 (2-17-40)









Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Forward Olin Kaser won game honors with his 7 point (a field goal and 5 free throws) effort in leading his team to a 27-18 triumph against the Dundee Bulldogs.  Kaser is averaging 8 points a game in the tournament.


DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Port Washington Purple Riders all won in the Consolation Division round of the County Class B Basketball Tournament at Memorial Hall on Saturday in games which saw the Stone Creek Golden Panthers, Dundee Bulldogs and Mineral City Tigers completely eliminated from the tournament.

The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) (31-18) barely recovered from its afternoon upset jitters in the final period of its contest with the Dundee Bulldogs (0-2) (13-24) and finally eked out a 27-18 win in a game much closer than the score indicates.

The Pirates led 6-3 in the opening period and 14-8 at the half, but went scoreless in the 3rd quarter.  The Bulldogs went in front 16-14 and then 18-14 as forward Milton Fruchey scored a bucket as the final quarter opened.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville took a 19-18 lead with 5 minutes remaining and then scored the remainder of its points on free throws as Dundee fought to get the ball.

Olin Kaser led Sugarcreek-Shanesville with 7 points, while his fellow cagers #12 forward Merle Smith and guard #4 Don Hershberger hit the nets for 6 markers.  Dundee was led by Paul "Bronco" Jones with 6 points, while his teammate Milton Fruchey swished for 5 markers.
