40 - Gnadenhutten Indians Win 7th Annual Consolation Tournament (2-24-40)










Gnadenhutten Indians #10 Sophomore Forward John Metzger was awarded game honors when he pushed the nets for 18 points (8 field goals and 2 free throws) in leading the Indians to the Consolation Championship by handing the Baltic Eagles a 39-33 defeat.  Metzger has averaged 13.8 points per game in the Tuscarawas County Tournament for a total of 69 markers.


DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (4-1) (24-22), another dark horse team, had a hard time with the Baltic Eagles (2-2) (16-23) in the 7th Consolation Division Championship game, but finally the Indians' superior heighth took its toll as Gnaden won a 39-33 victory despite a big Baltic rally in the final 3 minutes.

The Indians creeped to a 15-11 lead in the 1st quarter of the championship game.  The Warriors continued their assault with another 12 points, while their defense held the Eagles to 8 points leading up to intermission and a 27-19 lead.  The 3rd period had both teams point-by-point scoring 7 points each...34-26.  Baltic outscored Gnaden in the 4th quarter (7 to 5),but could not make up the difference.

The Eagles could not stop Metzger...before he was pulled in the 4th and final quarter.  John Metzger led the Indians with 18 points.  Baltic was led by #3 Senior forward Harold Snyder who hit for 12 points with teammate #11 Sophomore center John Regula close behind with 10 markers.
