DOVER - With a crowd of only 360 paid customers looking on Saturday afternoon, 3rd-year Head Coach L.P. Wartiainen's Baltic Eagles (1-0) (15-21) proved that this year's tournament is as unpredictable as next week's weather by coming from behind in the late stages of their game with the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-1) (30-18) to cop a 27-23 victory.
The Eagles served notice of the upset in the 1st quarter by taking a 9-7 lead, but Sugarcreek-Shanesville's attack bogged down in the 2nd period and the Pirates hit their stride to go in front by 14-12 at halftime. Midway in the 3rd stanza the Creekers had a 19-17 lead, but Baltic struck back and went ahead 22-19 before the Pirates were able to retaliate and the quarter ended with Baltic leading 22-21.
The final period saw forward Olin Kaser toss in a field goal to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a one-point lead, but that ended the Pirate thrusts. Baltic went on to pile up a 27-23 lead, then stalled away the remainder of the game, turning down 3 free throws for possession of the ball.
Number 4 Senior forward Harold Lahm of Baltic led the scoring with 12 points and picked up game honors, while Kaser was high for the Pirates with 9 markers. The Eagles were assessed 18 personals, #11 Junior forward Glenn Regula and #7 Senior guard Don Huff leaving the game, while the Pirates had 15 chalked up against them, #12 forward Merle Smith and #10 center Walter Blick being chased. Baltic made 7 of 16 free throws and Sugarcreek-Shanesville 9 of 17.
