36 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Trounces Dundee 29-17 (2-28-36)
DOVER - Last bid of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament Championship and the Daily Reporter Trophy was shunted aside last night as the Bolivar Cardinals and Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates qualified for the finals tonight by winning semi-final games and clinching the title for the Northern Division Section.
The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-0) (22-12) turned back the tournament's dark horse, Dundee Bulldogs (2-1) (12-15) 29-17 in a one-sided game in which the Eagles failed to rise to the occasion as it has several times previously during the season. The Pirate victory also avenged a League defeat.
Dundee, which gave the Midvale Blue Devils its toughest game during the season and then upset the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates for a parting League shot, went down almost without a struggle before the Pirates' slashing attack last night. Hampered by injuries, the Eagles were off form and no match for Head Coach Sundheimer's swashbucklers. The latter very promptly took a 10-2 lead in the 1st period and operated the game along the lines they pleased. They led 14-4 at the half and Dundee hadn't yet found the hoop from the field. Center Dick Kobel came through with 2 buckets in the 3rd period to pace the Dundee club in a 6 point attack, but Sugarcreek-Shanesville, with every man contributing to the scoring, kept pace with 5 points to lead 19-10 as the final chukker opened. There the Pirates grabbed 10 points, while giving Dundee seven.
Junior guard John Harmon with 8 points (2 field goals and 4 free throws) and Senior forward Dallas Hamsher with 7 markers (3 field goals and a free throw), led the Pirate scorers of Head Coach Bob Lanzer. Kobel and Machan, with 5 each (2 filed goals and 1 free throw), were high for the Dundee Bulldogs.
