23 - Bolivar Upsets Midvale 30-18 (2-28-36)

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (2-0) (17-12), redeeming itself for 2 early season League defeats and avenging one of them, sent the Champion Midvale Blue Devils (1-1) (15-10) into the Consolation Division with the season's biggest upset:  Bolivar 30 - Midvale 18.

Last night the Cardinals seemed to be invincible.  Using superior height to every advantage and playing heads-up ball along with it, they turned the Blue Devils back without permitting the Champions to assume a threatening position.  Unbeaten in 16 previous games this season, the Champions made a bid in the final period and succeeded in outscoring Bolivar 7-3, but were unable to reach their goal.  Pitted against the rangy Cardinals, the Blue Devils were unable to get those valuable follow-up shots under the basket.  And, with the zone-line and long-shots missing, they seldom had possession of the ball.  They went until the final minutes of the 2nd period before getting a single follow-up shot and there they got 3, sinking one for their first field goal.

Bolivar; meanwhile, with Senior center Paul Class and guard Kermit Lebold setting the pace, garnered 20 points and led the game 20-4 when the half ended.  Midvale was shut out completely the 1st period, missing 4 free throws, while Bolivar potted 11 points on 4 baskets and 3 fouls.  The 2 teams scored 7 points apiece in the 3rd period when Bolivar abandoned its scoring attack to protect its already imposing lead.  The quarter ended with the Cardinals leading 27-11.  With their 3rd period showing, the Champions staged a strong comeback in the 4th period to outscore Bolivar by a 7-3 margin, but the lack of follow-up shots was still apparent.

Class, led the scoring with 10 points for the Cardinals, while Kermit Lebold hit the hoops for 8 points.  Guard Frank Baumholtz, high-scoring Midvale star, was turned back with 7 points, the same number accounted for by Bolivar's guard Ward Kreis.
