57 - Tusky Routs Dundee 97-44 (2-13-57)
DOVER - After 2 games tonight in the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament the stage will be set for the semi-finals slated for next week. The Terrific Tigers of Strasburg and the Indians of Gnadenhutten romped to victories last night to gain berths for the semi-finals at Dover's Memorial Hall before approximately 1,100 fans. The Bengals turned on the power to overwhelm the Baltic Eagles 77-52 in the 1st Championship contest, while the Tribe out-ran and out-scored a battling Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirate quintet 81-63 in the nightcap. In the Consolation Division fracas the Tuscarawas Broncos polished off the Dundee Bulldogs in fine fashion to the tune of 97-44 to eliminate the Bulldogs from play since it was the 2nd loss for that team.
The Stone Creek Golden Panthers (16-4) will open Championship play tonight when they take on the Midvale Blue Devils (11-8), winners of an opening round game over the Broncos, while in the 2nd title-seeking game, the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (15-4) take on the Port Washington Purple Riders (12-7). A consy tilt between the Baltic Eagles (13-8) and the Pirates (10-11) will start action at 6:30.
The Tuscarawas Broncos (1-1) (2-18) (47-45) had little difficulty with the Dundee Bulldogs (0-2) (1-21) (33-55) in the 1st Consolation Division contest as they notched big leads at the end of each period in winning its 2nd game of the season...both coming via the Bulldogs who were probably making its final appearance on the basketball floor. After this year Dundee is expected to be consolidated with area schools and will be disbanded.
The Broncos of Head Coach Stan Culp, who showed improvement at the end of the regular season, again emphasized their improved play since they had been pushed hard by the Pups in regular season for a 68-65 victory. Last night's win came much easier with 10 men in the scoring column. Tuscarawas could have named the final score and although they had a 91-39 lead with 4 minutes left in the game, Coach Culp ordered his team to refrain from shooting and not run up the score. Tusky could have easily topped the century mark against the Red White and Blue which had won only one game this season.
Sophomore guard Tom Vesco topped the Blue and White with 30 points, while young Freshman Gary Caviness added 23 and veteran Senior forward Ed Hill tallied 18. Junior 5-10 forward Willie (Bill) Slemmer was high for the Bulldogs with 12 points, while 6 of the 7 boys on the team of Head coach Jack Reese scored in the school's final game.
