57 - Midvale Stuns Killbuck 91-52 (2-27-57)

DOVER - The Dover St. Joseph Ramblers takes the spotlight tonight when the 2nd round of action is launched at the Dover Class A Sectional Basketball Tournament at Memorial Hall.  The Ramblers are slated to square off against the touted Walnut Creek Cardinals at 8:45 in the nightcap of a double header.  In the 1st contest, the county's other parochial school, the Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves (8-10) meets the Augusta Blue Devils (12-6) at 7:30.

The charges of Head Coach Joe La Scola, boasting a record of 10 wins and 8 losses, will be seeking to upset the Holmes County League and Tournament Champions tonight who are carrying a 14-6 mark into the fracas.  Last night the Midvale Blue Devils (14-10) went through their paces as they wallopped the Killbuck Bucks (10-12) by a 91-52 count in gaining a berth in the quarter finals of the joust, while in the other contest the Dennison Railroaders (4-14) surprised the Millersburg Knights (11-9) by thrashing them 79-65.

The Blue Devils of Midvale won't be back in action until Friday night when they meet the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (18-5) in the nightcap seeking a semi-finals berth, while the Railroaders will be regarded to play the Gnadenhutten Indians (20-3) in the 1st contest.  Stone Creek and Midvale have met twice this season with the Panthers of Head coach Ed McGlumphy taking both contests, one by 9 and the other by 3 points.  The latter was in the County Tournament when the Golden Panthers eliminated the Diablos in the 2nd round of play.  The Panthers went on to upset the Strasburg Tigers and then lost in the finals to the Indians for the County Championship.

Gnaden had little trouble with the Railroaders twice this season and will be favored to belt the Roaders for the 3rd time.  The Dennison Railroaders had upset the Millersburg Knights in the 1st Sectional Tournament contest 79-63.

The Midvale Blue Devils (5-1) (14-10) had little more than a practice session with the Killbuck Bucks (19-12) after the Holmes County Tournament runner-ups had stalled the ball for 2:05 in the initial quarter, while the Blue Devils held a 2-0 lead.  The Bucks were attempting to draw Midvale out of a tight zone defense and when they did it was all over.  Sparked by Senior forward Dick (Dandy) Leggett, who stole the ball, drove in for layups on fast breaks and scored every way possible in the dribble sport to pace Head Coach Pete Hilliard's cagers to an easy victory.

Leggett led in the 1st period as he tallied 8 points, all on layups, while Senior guard John Colombo contributed to the cause with 8 more points on jump shots.  At the end of the 1st stanza the winners held an 18-9 advantage as they hit on 7 of 9 action shots for better than 77 percent, while Killbuck could muster only 4 of 7 tries.

They led the Bucks 36-22 at intermission as Leggett continued his hot pace by potting 10 markers as the Diablos connected on 8 of 16 attempts in romping to a 14-point lead.  The winners cut loose in the 3rd period and rolled to an impressive 61-31 score with 6-1 Senior forward Gary Haney, Senior forward Lonnie Wolfe and Leggett all scoring 7 points apiece.  Colombo sat out the latter part of the 2nd and most of the 3rd stanza with 3 fouls.

The Reserves took over with only 2 minutes gone in the final canto, but before they did the starters had romped to a lopsided lead with Colombo getting back into the act with 8 points.  The Subs did a commendable job as they continued on to victory to pile up 20 more points and to hold down the victory.  Leggett ended the contest with 27 points for Scoring Honors, while Colombo had 18 and Wolfe chimed in with 17 to round out the scoring.  Tom Taylor with 16 points was the only Buck cager to hit in double figures.

The Devils ended the contest by hitting on 33 of 77 action flings for 43 percent, while they added 25 of 36 free throws.  Killbuck scored only 14 of 49 action shots for a cool 28 percent, but added 24 more points via the free throw line, while missing 15.  Forty-five personals were called on the 2 teams, 25 against the winners and 20 on the losers.  The Blue And Gold lost Wolfe in the 3rd quarter, while Gary Glassford left the contest for the Bucks in the final chukker.
