57 - TV Cruises Against Port 88-63 (2-14-57)

DOVER - The 4 teams that finished in the 1st four spots in the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League after regular season play have worked their way into semi-final berths.  The Stone Creek Golden Panthers "clawed" out a thrilling 70-67 victory over the defending Champion Midvale Blue Devils as Senior forward Ron Deibel set a new scoring mark for the winners and the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans man-handled the Port Washington Purple Riders 88-63 to complete the semi teams.  The Golden Panthers will take on the League Champion Strasburg Tigers and the Trojans square off with the Gnadenhutten Indians next Thursday evening at Memorial Hall.

The Indians and Panthers ended the regular season tied for 2nd place with 7-2 marks, while TV took 4th with a 6-3 mark.  The Tigers were undefeated in 9 games.  In the Consolation Division game last night the Baltic Eagles hammered out a 78-66 verdict over a stubborn Sugarcreek-Shanesville  Pirates team to set the stage for 2 consy clashes on Saturday night.

The Tuscarawas Broncos will open action Saturday evening when it battles the Blue Devils, the team that defeated them in the opening of the tournament 97-55 and the Eagles take on the Purple Riders.  The Midvale-Tusky game is booked to start at 7:30, while the nightcap is slated for 8:45.

The Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (1-0) (16-4) (1-0) in their 1st contest of the tourney proved that they will be a hard team to beat last night as 4 players tallied in double figures and the Trojans took a comparatively easy decision from the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-1) (12-8) (26-55).  After the cagers of Head Coach Raymond (Sucker) Low held a 16-10 first quarter lead they were never in trouble and strengthened their margin with the end of each period.

Sophomore 6-3 forward Ben Price from Mineral City and 6-1 Senior center Ken (Bobo) Haueter from Bolivar provided the rebound strength, while scoring 20 and 16 points respectively, but the sharp-shooting of 6-1 Senior 6-0 Dave Jo Wolf, also of Bolivar, led the powerful Trojan offense with 24 points as he hit well from outside and also led a potent fast break.  Senior 6-2 forward Ed Bates put on a terrific show for the Purple Riders, but to no avail, as he blazed the nets for 32 points to take scoring honors for the evening.  Senior 5-9 guard Denver Glazer and Senior guard Jerry Hannahs followed with 11 and 10 points respectively for the losers also.

Tuscarawas Valley jumped to a 10 point 35-25 lead by intermission as a tight defense held the usually hot shooting Port Washington to only 25 points.  Scoring 25 points themselves the winners rolled on to a 60-41 margin going into the final turn and coasted to victory, but still hit for 28 more points.  TV relegated Port into the Consolation Division bracket.
