57 - Stone Creek Slips By Midvale 70-67 (2-14-57)

This photo clearly shows the turning point in last night's game between the Midvale Blue Devils and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers.  With only a few seconds remaining in the game and the Golden Panthers leading by only one point, the Cats got the tip and went on to clinch the contest.  Shown in the picture are Senior Tom Border (left), Senior 6-1 Reuben Lorenz (7) and Senior Forward 5-11 Ron Deibel (6) of Stone Creek.  Also in the photo are Senior Lonnie Wolfe (4) and Senior Guard John Columbo (7) of the Blue Devils and Junior 5-8 Forward Rod Reinhart of the Panthers.  (The Daily Reporter Photo)

The Stone Creek Golden Panthers' remarkable Senior Forward Ron Deibel lead his team with 31 points in slipping past the Midvale Blue Devils 70-67.  This was the 1st appearance for the Golden Panthers in the tournament this year.  In addition to Game Honors, Deibel broke the individual career scoring record with 1,815 points in his 4 years of tournament play.  And he is not done yet!  (The Daily Reporter Photo)

DOVER - The game between the Midvale Blue Devils (1-1) (10-10) (67-31) and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (1-0) (17-4) (30-44) was anyone's from start to finish as they provided tournament fans with the 1st real thriller in the 3 nights of action.  The Golden Panthers held the upper hand most of the 1st half, but the Blue Devils went ahead right at intermission and at the end of the 3rd stanza as the 2 teams were tied.  Then Head Coach Ed McGlumphy's charges united efforts in the final canto to stay ahead of Midvale.  With only 2 seconds remaining in the contest and the scoring reading 68-67 in favor of Stone Creek, Senior 5-11 forward Ron Deibel put the clincher on the contest with a jump push shot.

Deibel broke the old record of 1,792 points in the 1st half as he needed only 8 points to tie and 9 points for a new mark as the red-headed lad hit 12 points in the 1st quarter alone.  His 31 points for the entire game brings his total to 1,815 for 4 years.  The old record was held by Bill Jones, another former Stone Creek star who set the mark when Deibel was only a Freshman.  Jone's mark eclipsed another Stone Creek cager's record, Jom Lorenz with 1,539 for 4 years of play.

The victory was a team effort; although, Deibel did most of the scoring as Senior Ben "Brains" Wherly, playmaker Junior 5-8 forward Rod Reinhart, Junior guard Harold Baker and Senior Rueben Lorenz all turned in sterling performances.  Reinhart followed Deibel in the scoring with 15 points, while Wherley had 10 markers.  Senior guard John Colombo put on a fine exhibition of shooting for the Diablos and ended the contest with 29 points, while driving Senior forward Dick (Dandy) Leggett following with 21 as the pair joined hands to score all but 17 of their team's total output.

In the nip-and-tuck battle, the Panthers held narrow edges throughout the 1st quarter and held a 21-17 advantage at the end of the 1st quarter with Deibel's 12 points and a like number by Colombo leading the way.  The Devils knotted the count 23-23 early in the 2nd frame, for one of 7 times throughout the tilt, but the Cats broke on top once again and carried a 29-23 edge before Colombo and Wolfe put the Blue and Gold ahead 31-29 for the 1st time in the ball game.  Leggett drove the length of the floor near the end of the 2nd period and potted a layup to give the Midvale Blue Devils a 33-31 half time lead.

The Blue Devils went to work in the 3rd period and raced to a 37-31 lead, the widest margin held by either team the entire evening.  Midvale held onto their edge and several minutes later was still out front 50-43 with approximately 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.  Senior guard 5-7 Mel McAfee dumped in a layup, Lorenzx hit 2 free throws and Reinhart flipped in a push shot as the Blue and Gold moved to within one point at 50-49 near the end of the 3rd period.  Finally, the 2 teams ended the 3rd frame knotted at 53-53.

The Stone Creek Golden Panthers eased out to a 61-59 lead early in the final quarter and began playing a control type of game.  The Diablos went scoreless for almost 3 minutes later before Wolfe broke the ice for the Devils.  But the almost unstoppable Deibel, who hit on 59 percent of his shots during the evening, put the Golden Panthers ahead 68-64 with only 25 seconds remaining.  The Midvale Blue Devils edged to a 68-67 score in the matter of a few seconds, but Deibel iced the contest with his push shot.

Unofficial statistics showed Stone Creek connecting on 26 of 60 attempts from the field for 43 percent, while the Blue Devils tallied 27 field goals on 82 action shots for 32 percent.  The winners hit a blazing 59 percent in the 2nd half, while playing a control type of game and waiting for their shots.  The win gives McGlumphy's cagers a glimpse at 18 victories in the next tilt.
