57 - Gnaden Drops The Pirates 82-63 (2-13-57)
This was just one of the many mix-ups, pile-ups and scrambles that highlighted the 2nd night of action in the County League Tournament last night. An unknown Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates player went bowling here, while chasing a loose ball and an unidentified Gnadenhutten Indians cager stands over him. Watching the mix-up is 6-0 Senior Larry Biggs (55) of the Indians, Freshman Koran Zehnder (40) of the Pirates, 5-7 Senior Larry Clark (33) and 5-7 Junior Ed Shull (11) both of the Tribe. DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (18-3) (54-48) after the flashy Indians rolled to a 47-27 intermission lead over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-1) (10-11) (59-45) in the night cap, there were only about 600 fans left of the jam-packed Memorial Hall. Gnaden Head Coach Dick Scott gained an early 2-0 lead, but the Pirates came back to knot the count. But that was the end of the closeness of the tilt as the Tribe turned on the gas and sped to a 20-2 lead before Sugarcreek-Shanesville could find the net again. Missing 6 straight field goal attempts in the opening stanza, the Corsairs gave the Scarlet and Gray the break they needed to open the large gap.
With 5-10 Senior Eldon Miller and 6-0 Senior Larry Biggs, both forwards, each swishing 4 fielders in the 1st quarter of play, the Gnadenhutten Indians held a 26-8 first period lead. All 5 starters scored for the Indians in the 2nd frame to maintain the lead. The Bucs never gave up and outscored Gnaden by one point the 2nd half, but the Tribe held a 66-36 lead at the last half and went on to victory.
Reliable Miller potted 27 points to lead the Scarlet and Gray, while Biggs and 5-7 Senior Larry Clark each had 18. Freshmen center Chuck Stingel was high for the cagers of Head Coach Jim Stull with 24 points with another Freshman forward Koran Zehnder chiming in with 15 markers. A tight defense by the Gnadenhutten Indians held the Maroon and Grey to only 24 shots in the 1st half alone, according to unofficial statistics, while the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates finished up with 18 field goals in 50 attempts for 36 percent. The Indians tried a huge total of 91 shots from the field, sinking 36 of them for 33 percent. In the 1st half Gnaden made 22 of 46 for 48 percent.
