DOVER - The 2nd team this week hung up its basketball togs for the season when the Baltic Eagles (1-1) (14-8) (36-52) whipped the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-2) (10-12) (59-46) 78-66 in the 2nd Consolation Division game of the tournament. The sharp-shooting Eagles looked like a different team than the one that lost to the Strasburg Tigers in the Championship bracket as 4 players hit in double figures with Senior guard 5-5 Glen Reidenbach leading the way with 23 points and Freshman forward John Rice following with 20, Junior center 6-0 Larry Ladrach had 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Flyers trailed 16-15 after the initial quarter, but took over the lead in the 2nd frame and never was headed; although, the Pirates did make a game try of it in the 3rd stanza. Freshmen forward Koran Zehnder and Freshman center Charlie (Chuck) Stingel led the young Corsairs' offensive attack with 18 and 11 points, while Senior forward 5-8 Bill Gerber chimed in with 14 and Freshman guard Jim Gerber picked up 10.
Baltic moved to a 38-26 lead by intermission and held a good 57-44 edge going into the final canto. Although the Buccaneers moved to within only several points at one time during the 3rd period the Orange and Black held onto their lead and kept potting away to post the victory. The Baltic Eagles gained the right to meet the Port Washington Purple Riders in a consy fracas on Saturday night, while the Maroon and Grey were eliminated from the tournament. The Dundee Bulldogs were the 1st to go as they lost the 2nd game of the double elimination event Wednesday night to the Tuscarawas Broncos 97-44.
The 2 teams were about even from the field with the Eagles holding a slight edge hitting for 29 field goals, while the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates tallied 28. But Baltic provided with plenty of chances, connected on 20 of 29 chances at the free throw line, while the Pirates hit on 10 of 20.
