32 - Thursday Night's Wrap-Up And Tourney Sidelights

DOVER - The Cardinals of Bolivar, hitting the basket with astonishing accuracy, stole the thunder by defeating Midvale's Blue Devils, tournament winners last year and the Strasburg Tigers and Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates last night won expected victories as the annual county tournament got under way at Legion Hall before a packed house.  Bolivar playing sensational basketball upset Midvale 40-30.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville crushed the Port Washington Purple Riders in the 2nd quarter and coasted to a 27-18 win.  Battling boys from Baltic pressed Strasburg to the final gun, but the 1932 league champions emerged on top by dropping the Eagles 37-25.

After a fine 1st quarter, when they held the opposition to a 15-9 score, Port Washington's representatives wilted before the quick breaking Sugarcreek-Shanesville offensive and the victors rolled up a 36-15 count before the halftime intermission.  They continued upon their merry way to the 3rd quarter and Head Coach Harold Sundheimer sent in his 2nd team midway in the period.  Substitutes finished the game.

Midvale, one of the 4 ceded teams and favored to cop the opening game was no match for the inspired Cardinals.  While the Blue Devils missed plenty of scoring opportunities they were outplayed by Bolivar most of the way.

Baltic cagers, after trailing at the half by 20-9, staged a brilliant rally in the 2nd half and kept the huge crowd in a frenzy by their determined and almost successful efforts.  Head Coach Paul Roby of the Tigers was forced to keep his regulars in the game until the hectic fracas ended.  And nothing but the best of efforts wared off defeat.  The losers kept within striking distance all the way and played the most aggressive ball of the evening.

TOURNAMENT SIDELIGHTS

- John Studer of Strasburg with 13 points was high scorer in the 3 tournament games last night.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Boyd Burkey and Hugo Wasse each tallied 12 markers.

- Three real battles are on tonight's program.  The Mineral City Tigers and Dundee Bulldogs, pretty evenly matched, tangle at 7PM.  At 8PM the Gnadenhutten Indians and Tuscarawas Broncos meet.  Tusky scored one of the startling upsets of the court regular season by defeating Gnaden and don't think the Redskins aren't aching to get even.  Gnaden is one of the 4 ceded teams, along with Midvale (deceased), Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville.  At 9PM Sugarcreek-Shanesville takes on Bolivar.

- Head Coach Sundheimer of Sugarcreek-Shanesville was able to rest his regulars a full quarter and a half for their hard tussle tonight because they piled up such a good lead on Port.

- Between games students joined in singing 2 songs written by county school pupils for the tournament.  The composition sung to the tune of "Oh Susanna" is the work of Carl Tucker, Sugarcreek-Shanesville.  The other to the tune of the Ohio State "Fight the Team" song, was writtren by Mark Ackerman of Mineral City.

- Strasburg, luckiest in the drawings, does not have to play again until the 1st semi-final game at 2PM Saturday.  Meeting them will be the winner of tonight's game between Mineral City and Dundee.

- Outstanding players in the games last night included Junior Boyd Burkey and Sylvester Harmon, Sugarcreek-Shanesville; Juniors Norman Glazer and Sam Eckfield of Port Washington; Senior Elmer Kreis, Wolf and Detrich, Bolivar; White and R. Stevenson, Midvale; Junior Joe Steffe and Sophomore John Studer of Strasburg; and Junior Harold Huprich, Senior Owen Scheetz and Freshman Paul Levengood, of Baltic.

- Bolivar's victory more than made up for a rather unsuccessful season.  The team was minus some of it's regulars most of the year and until last night had played mediocre ball.  They were primed for Midvale and their victory was justly deserved.  Ludwig Birk is the Bolivar mentor.  Midvale's fans and players, while they expected to win, were good sports about their defeat.  Head Coach Pilkington said:  "Can't win them all."
