32 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Rips Bolivar 40-23 2-26-32)
DOVER - The quick-breaking, smooth-passing ability of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-0) (9-6) came to the fore in the 2nd half at Legion Hall last night as the Bolivar Cardinals, who played so brilliantly to eliminate Midvale on Thursday night, fell 40-23. The Pirate victors increased their slight 22-17 first half lead to 30-18 in the 3rd quarter and went on to win handily when the tired Bolivar boys no longer could pick-off the fleet scorers of the opposition.
Junior Forward Boyd Burkey, who does most of the looting for Sugarcreek-Shanesville, couldn't miss and his 19 points abled the victors to stay in front all the way. Bolivar missed buckets by the half dozen, especially in the 3rd quarter when the winners assumed their commanding lead, while holding Bolivar to a single point. In 2 appearances the Pirates, one of the 2 ceded teams still in the running, has flashed the best all-around form of any team in the tournament. Senior forward Elmer Kreis and forward Wolf of the Cardinals were the leading scorers as each tallied 6 points each.
