32 - Strasburg Gets By New Concord 22-15 (3-12-32)

DENNISON - As a result of the Strasburg Tigers (7-0) defeating the New Concord Muskies, conquerors of Millersburg, today at noon by a score of 22-15 and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville defeat of St. John's Fighting Irish this morning 33-26, Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville  (7-1) tangle again at 7:30PM tonight at Dennison for the District Championship of Class B and the right to go to Columbus next week.  It will be the 4th time the 2 schools will have met this year.  Strasburg defeated Sugarcreek 3 times this season, once during the season, and once in the league and once again by 2 points in a hard fought game for the Tuscarawas County Tournament 2 weeks ago.

The Tigers jumped into the lead against the Muskies in the 1st quarter today and stayed ahead to the final.  The superior height of the Strasburg men, especially Senior forward Bill Yates, was a great advantage.  The Tigers led in the 1st period 6-4 and led 8-4 at the half.  Strasburg was leading at the end of the 3rd quarter, but only by 3 points, 14-11.  Strasburg was lead by Sophomore forward John Studer with 2 field goals and 4 free throws.  Slater, Glass and Brown led New Concord with 1 field goal and 1 free toss each for a total of 9 points.  Every member of the Muskies team ended up in the scoring column.

32 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Rolls Over St. Johns 33-26 (3-12-32)

DENNISON - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (7-1) had an easy time taking the measure of St. John's Fighting Irish of Bellaire in the 1st morning game on Saturday.  Junior forward Boyd Burkey, the Pirate crack shot, was 'hot' and made 8 field goals, but few of them were from any distance.  Burkey and Senior forward Ken Ricker, playing a marvelous floor game, worked together under the basket with Ricker feeding the ball to his steady teammate, who has made 36 points in the 1st two tournament games.

The 1st quarter was close 8-7, but the Sugarcreek-Shanesville team pulled far ahead in the next 2 frames, 24-14 and 30-18.  Head Coach Harold Sundheimer replaced Burkey and Senior guard Hugo Wassem with 3 substitutes at the beginning of the 4th quarter, but shot them back in when St. John's began to click and made 8 points in as few minutes.  Burkey led the Pirates in scoring with 21 points, while the Fighting Irish were led by Masgistro who had 2 field goals and 7 free throws for a total of 11 points.

32 - Strasburg Slays Byesville 34-21 (3-11-32)

DENNISON - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (6-1) and the Strasburg Tigers (6-0) of Tuscarawas County may meet for the Class B Championship of the Eastern District tonight at Dennison.  Both yesterday went into the semi-final round by convincing victories and were to play this morning for the right to compete in the final.  The Sugarcreek scoring machine was at it's best against Bethesda and the county lads won 44-33.  Strasburg looked equally good in disposing the Byesville Colts 34-21.  Malvern forfeited to St. John's of Bellaire because of an epidemic of influensa and St. John's reached the semi-final without taking the court.  New Concord, Strasburg's foe this morning, outfought the strong Millersburg crew and won 30-24.  Concord cleverly handled the ball and shot with great accuracy to overcome the handicap of facing a taller team.

It was the sharp-shooting Junior forward Boyd Burkey who led the Pirates in scoring.  He tallied 15 points, but every one of his teammates broke into the scoring column.  The victors had everything their own way with the exception of the 3rd quarter when Bethesda rallied and almost closed the gap.  The winners led at the end of the 3rd chukker 30-26.  They hit the hoop with regularity again in the final heat to take a decisive victory.

In the Strasburg-Byesville game, the Colts couldn't stop Senior Bill Yates and Sophomore John Studer, Pirate ace forwards.  Studer chalked up 13 points, 6 field goals and 1 free throw and Yates made 12, six field goals.  Like Sugarcreek, all of the Tiger regular players helped with the scoring.  Head Coach Paul Roby used his entire team after the game was sewed up in the 4th period.  Strasburg didn't get started in the 1st quarter and the count ws knotted at 7 points.  The victors led at halftime, 17-14 and at the 3rd period 24-16.  Droltz led the Colts with 8 points, 4 field goals.

32 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Eliminates Bethesda 44-33 (3-11-32)

DENNISON - Functioning in brilliant and determined form, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (6-1) defeated Bethesda 44-33 in the opening game of the Class B District Tournament at Dennison this afternoon.  The Pirates' hardest battle came in the 3rd quarter when Bethesda made 13 points, while the Tuscarawas County entry made only 9, but in the final quarter the locals spurted to an easy victory.

Junior forward Boyd Burkey made 15 points and not a member on the team made less than six.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville had a total of 16 field goals to 14 for their opponents and pitched 12 fouls to their opponent's five.  Malvern has forfeited to St. John's of Bellasire, because of a measles epidemic at Malvern.  This game was to have been played this afternoon.  As a result Sugarcreek-Shanesville meets the Bellaire team tomorrow morning.

The Pirates led in the 1st period 8-5, and followed that up by leading 21-13 at the half.  In the 3rd quarter, Sugarcreek-Shanesville was leading by only 4 points, 30-26 at the sound of the horn.  Leading the way for Bethesda was forward Michener who canned 4 field goals and 2 free throws for a total of 10 points.

32 - Eastern Ohio District Basketball Tournament

DENNISON - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (5-1) drew Bethesda and the Strasburg Tigers (5-0) picked Byesville at the Dennison drawings last night for the Class B District finals this Friday and Saturday.  Tuscarawas County's Class B representatives are in separate brackets and if each wins 2 games they will repeat their court classic of the county tournament with higher laurals at stake...the Class B title of the Eastern District.

Sugarcreek and Bethesda will open the District Tournament at Dennison on Friday at 12PM.  Strasburg plays Byesville at 8PM Friday.  Malvern drew Bellaire St. John's for 2PM Friday and Millersburg is paired with New Concord, probably the strongest team to qualify at the New Concord Sectional event at 4PM Friday.

The upper bracket semi-final slated for 10AM Saturday, will find winners of the Sugarcreek-Bethesda and Malvern-Bellaire St. John's games competing for the right to enter the final at 7:30PM Saturday.  The lower bracket semi-final, between winners of the Millersburg-New Concord and Strasburg-Byesville games, will be played at 11AM Saturday.

32 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Thumps Dennison 26-10 (3-5-32)

DOVER - Shooting-wise, the Dennison Railroaders had more tough luck in this department against the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (5-1) Saturday night than all the other teams of the tournament put together.  If they had made but a fair share of the shots which rolled around the ring and dropped off on the wrong side, it would have been Sugarcreek-Shanesville that lost the game.  The Railroaders, even with all their hard luck included, managed to get 5 action shots through the hoop.  The vanquishers made 7.

The good eyes of the Pirates' foul shooters should be given credit for that team's victory over Dennison whom they eliminated by a score of 26-10 for the margin of safety lay in the number of fouls they made.  Guard Hugo Wassem of Sugarcreek-Shanesville was the 1st and counted 6 free throws.  Guard Sylvester Harmon was as good with 4 more foul tosses.  The Pirates led all the way with the score 7-4 in the 1st quarter, 14-6 by halftime and 20-10 at the end of the 3rd period.  The Pirate defense held the Railroaders scoreless during the 4th and final quarter.  Wassem was the high point man for Sugarcreek-Shanesville with 1goal and 6 foul markers for a total of 8 points.  Dennison was led by guard Galbraith who managed 2 field goals for a total of 4 points.

32 - Strasburg In Close Win Vs Newcomerstown 19-17 (3-5-32)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (5-0) fought back the Newcomerstown Trojans in a close 19-17 game at Legion Hall.  Sophomore forward John Studer, Strasburg's 'Deadeye Dick' had 3 personal fouls called on him in the first 5 minutes of the Newcomerstown game, but steered clear of the 4th until there was only 3 minutes of the game left to play.  He was tempted many times...times when it would have paid to foul his man...but held himself in check.  Those fouls ruined countless chances he might have taken to score.  The Tigers jumped out front 9-2 in the 1st quarter, held only a 3-point lead by the half 12-9.  By the time the 3rd period ended, Strasburg had increased their lead to 6 points, 17-11.  The Trojans saved their best effort for the last quarter as they roared back, but failed as the minutes ran out and the horn sounded.  Senior forward Bill Yates led the victors with 3 field goals and 1 free throw for 7 points.  Newcomerstown was led by Everett McElhaney as he also had 3 field goals and a free throw for 7 markers.

DOVER - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-1) trained its big guns on the Delroy Warriors in the final period of their game this morning and emerged from the contest on the winning end of a 42-28 score.  The Warriors battled stubbornly through the 1st 3 periods, but dropped off in the final when Potts, their pivot man, was taken from the game on fouls.  The Pirates led 11-8 at the 1st period, 19-18 at the half and 30-26 at the beginning of the 4th quarter.  Forward Ken Ricker scored high for the winners with 8 action shots and 3 fouls for a total of 19 points.  Junior forward Boyd Burkey, generally the high scorer for his team, was unable to find the hoop until late in the game.  He hit with 5 field goals and 2 foul tosses for 12 points.  Four of his field buckets were scored in the last half.  Potts of Delroy was their top scorer with 4 field goals and 1 free throw.

32 - Strasburg Blasts Yorkville 26-11 (3-4-32)

DOVER - In the 1st night of the Sectional Tournament, Millersburg beat Lakeville 38-25 and Freeport walked over Walnut Creek 29-18.  But, it was the Strasburg Tigers (4-0) who stole last night's show with a relentless attack on the strong Yorkville Panther defense which eventually gave way and took with it the Jefferson County team's chance of victory.

Both teams opened with a whirlwind exhibition of fast ball and when the 1st period ended the Tigers trailed by a score of 4-1.  In the next period, Sophomore forward John Studer, Strasburg flash, broke loose and piled up 4 action shots, while his running mate, Senior forward Bill Yates, netted another to run their half-time socre to 11.  Meanwhile, they had allowed the Panthers only one point...a foul and ended the 2nd period 11-5.  Each team scored 6 points in the 3rd quarter and they entered the home stretch with Strasburg leading 17-11.  From then on it was all Strasburg.  Late in the period Head Coach Paul Roby was able to pull his 1st string men from the game, yet Yorkville failed to add anything to their count and went out of the game with the same 11 points they had at the end of the 3rd quarter, while the winners took 4 field goals and a foul and picked up a 26-11 victory.

Studer received game honors with 6 field goals for 12 points.  Center Fernihough and guard McKean were high point men for Yorkville with 4 points each.

32 - All-Tournament Honors 1932

DOVER - Choices for forward on the Reporter's All-Tournament Team were easy.  The positions naturally fell to John Studer of the Strasburg Tigers and Boyd Burkey of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  Both were high scorers, excellent passers and great floor men.  Studer was stronger defensively, but Burkey was a 'dead' shot.  Good centers were scarce in the tournament.  Sam Schenk of Strasburg stood head and shoulders above the lot.  Joe Steffe of Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Detrich of the Bolivar Cardinals were probably the best defensive men in the tourney and they were also capable of scoring points when they were needed.  Detrich; however, played with a team that was eliminated in its 2nd game and for that reason, chiefly, is ranked on the 2nd team.  Sylvester Harmon of Sugarcreek-Shanesville was a fine guard and also a scorer.  He was aggressive, fast and a splendid floor man.  He is ranked ahead of his teammate, HugoWassem; because, of his better guarding all the way.  Wassem was a high scorer, but in making honorary selections a guard's 1st qualification is his defensive ability.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (3-0) (22-5) carried home 2 additions to their crowded trophy case Saturday night after winning their 2nd basketball championship of the season by coming from behind to defeat a crack Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirate team (3-1) (10-7), 34-32, in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament final at Legion Hall.  Head Coach Paul M. Roby's boys previously had won the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Season League Cup with 9 straight victories, their 3rd straight championship.  Both trophies were presented following their thrilling win in the last game of a tournament that won't be forgotten soon.  Not until after the game had ended did the champions chalk up their 34th point.  Just as the final gun cracked Referee Earl Gross, who worked the entire tournament in his usual efficient manner, called a foul on a Sugarcreek-Shanesville player.  The fans stampeded out on the floor, pounding the backs of the Strasburg players and yelling themselves hoarse.  Finally a space was cleared about the foul circle and Sophomore forward John Studer, best all-around forward in the tournament, tossed in one free throw and missed a 2nd.  But, the game had been already won.  A crowd estimated at 1200, with not even standing room left, thrilled as 2 of the best teams that have ever met in the county tournament final, battled back and forth across the court.  The fans made so much noise that players had difficulty in hearing the referee's whistle and the timers' horns.  And there was occasion for the din.  The lead changed hands with almost every basket.

Strasburg outplayed Sugarcreek-Shanesville in the 1st quarter, caging 5 field goals (4 of them by Studer) to one by guard Sylvester Harmon of the losers.  The Tigers led as the 1st period ended 10-6.  The Pirates garnering 4 points from the free throw line.  Two fouls by guard Hugo Wassem and a goal each by center Harold Logsdon and forward Ken Ricker in the last 4 minutes of the 2nd chukker gave Sugarcreek-Shanesville a 20-16 lead to take to the dressing room at the intermission.  Strasburg had led throughout the 1st half until Logsdon's goal tied the score at 16 all.

The runners-up increased their lead to 23-16 before Strasburg's scorers again broke loose.  Senior center Sam Schenk finally tying the score at 25 all.  Wassem caged a pot-shot just before the 3rd quarter gun to put the quick-breaking Sugarcreek-Shanesville boys out in front again.  That 4th quarter had the customers in hysterics.  Studer dazzled with a one-hander, tying the score.  Schenk followed in a long heave with a 'sucker' shot, but forward Boyd Burkey, whose uncanny accuracy was one of the features of the tournament, tied it up again with a beautiful long shot.  Harmon tossed a foul, but Schenk gave Strasburg the advantage again with a fielder.  Studer broke for the bucket and caged another of his overhead fielders and the Tigers led by 33-30 with 2 minutes of playing time left.

With less than a minute remaining Burkey eluded Junior Joe Steffe, best of all defensive men in the tourney and caged a bucket from the side-court.  Then came the gun and the foul toss by Studer.  This duel between Steffe and Burkey saw 2 extraordinary players at their best.  Burkey, who has averaged 17 points per game this season, was kept away from the basket and seldom given a net shot even from long range by the alert Steffe.  That Burkey is a marvelous shot is attested by his 10 points, 9 of them scored in the 2nd half.  And practically all of them were made from long range and without hesitation, because he was well covered by Steffe.  Studer, clever with the ball, a good shot, aggressive and a fine defensive player, stole the scoring honors with 17 points, the product of several fielders and 3 fouls.

Studer made 35 points in 3 tournament games and was topped by Burkey, who chalked up 52 markers in 4 contests.  He tallied 12 points against Port Washington, 19 against Bolivar, 11 against Tuscarawas and 10 against Strasburg.  Studer made 13 points against Baltic, 5 against Dundee, playing only a little more than a quarter and 17 against the runners-up in the final.

Sugarcreek-Shanesville, drawn in the hardest bracket was forced to play 3 games, while Strasburg had to meet only 2 foes to reach the final.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville walloped Port Washington 48-27; Bolivar, 40-23 and Tuscarawas 45-30.  Strasburg downed Baltic 37-25 and eliminated Dundee in the semi-final, 33-12, with the 2nd team playing almost 3 full quarters.  Head Coach Harold Sindheimer used his entire 2nd team the 2nd half against Tuscarawas in the semi-final game.

DALE CLARK WINS 3RD FOUL SHOOT TITLE OF COUNTY

For the 3rd consecutive year Dale Clark, diminutive Gnaden lad, won the foul shooting championship of Tuscarawas County in the contests held Saturday afternoon at Legion Hall.  Clark, speedy forward on the Gnadenhutten Varsity, was forced to shoot off a tie with Sidney Beachy of Dundee to cop the trophy presented by the S. Toomey Company of Dover.  In 35 tries each made 30 and in the 15 extra shots, Clark tossed 12 and Beachy made 11.  Donald Kreis of Bolivar was 3rd with 29 out of 35.  Fifteen entered.

The Spidell Printing Company trophy was presented to Strasburg by John Spidell.  Andrew Beechy, Dundee high principal, presented Strasburg with the Sanitar Milk Company trophy, awarded to the winner of the league title.  Herbert P. Lohrman, tournament manager, awarded the foul-shooting trophy to Clark.
