46 - Midvale Turns Back Baltic 43-34 (2-12-46)

DOVER - The County Class B Tournament opened last night at Memorial Hall with the Strasburg Tigers winning their 20th straight game, the Tuscarawas Broncos setting an all-time tournament scoring mark and Bolivar's Cardinals and Midvale's Blue Devils winning in well-played contests.

Strasburg County League Champions and only team in the county scholastic circles to go through the entire season unbeaten, topped the Dundee Bulldogs 45-20, Tuscarawas broke the scoreboard with a 102-23 walkaway over the Stone Creek Golden Panthers, Bolivar was a little too good for the Port Washington Purple Riders 52-42 and Midvale turned the Baltic Eagles back 43-34.

As a result of the wins, Strasburg, Bolivar and Tusky go into the quarter-final round, while Midvale is already there.  All of last night's losers drop into the Consolation Division Tournament.

The Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) (40-20) (12-6)-Baltic Eagles (0-1) (21-33) (8-9) game, last one on the card last night, was the best played contest of the evening and turned out to be a sharpshooting race between the Eagles' Senior forward Paul Brown and Midvale's Senior forward Dave Stevenson.  Brown, an expert at corner and side shots, dented the nets for 19 points, while Stevenson, using a one-handed jump shot most of the time, hit for 9 field goals and 18 points.

Baltic took a 10-8 lead at the opening quarter, but Midvale perked up in the 2nd and had a 20-15 edge by the time intermission rolled around.  The Blue Devils offense picked up 14 points in the 3rd stanza and their offense held the Eagles to just 6 points...Midvale 34-24.  In the final quarter, Baltic shook-off the Midvale defense and raced to within 3 points of the Blue Devils, 34-31 before fading out as Midvale's offense then put on a victory rush to victory.  Midvale had previously dropped Baltic 21-20 during the season.

Midvale's Senior forward Jim De Mattio was also in double figures following up Stevenson with 11 points (4 field goals and 3 free throws).
