DOVER - Sixteen teams, representing 6 counties, will start the battle that may lead to the right to compete for the State Class B Basketball Championship at Columbus late this month, here Friday, in the tournament for the Northern Section of the Eastern Sectional. The race will be narrowed to 4 teams by Saturday night and these 4 will compete in the Class B finals at Dennison, Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15, with the 4 teams that will qualify in a similar meet at Cambridge this week-end. The Gnadenhutten Indians, Tuscarawas County Class B Champions, has the honor of playing the 1st game as the result of the drawings held last night at the American Legion Building where the tgurney will be held. The play the West Lafayette Generals at 7PM Friday.
From all indications, the Class B tournament for the northern section of the Eastern Sectional of Ohio here Friday and Saturday, will be one of the most successful ever held in this section. The drawings, made last Monday, are ideal, from the standpoint of close matches and crowd pleasers. Three games are on tap for each session, Friday and Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening. Four teams will qualify for the finals to be held at Dennison Friday and Saturday March 14-15. Carrollton is being favored by many fans as one of the best teams in the event and a sure qualifier. But, they stack up against strong opposition right off the bat in Newcomerstown.
The Midvale Blue Devils and Gnaden may stage their county tournament final battle all over again in case they win in their 1st games. Gnadenhutten opens the tourney at 7PM Friday against West Lafayette, a tough aggregation and Midvale plays at 8PM Friday against the Augusta Blue Devils. If both win they tangle at 4PM Saturday.
