30 - Bellaire St. Johns Takes Out Midvale 29-22 (3-14-30)

DENNISON - The Midvale Blue Devils (4-2) was knocked out of the Ohio Class B running last night by a fast and clever St. Johns Irish team from Bellaire.  The scoreboard showed the Irish win by 7 points and the Tuscarawas boys were outclassed in the later periods by one of the finest passing attacks of the tournament so far.  St. Johns was led by guard Huckenberry with 3 goals and a foul shot for 7 points followed by forward Williams who dropped in 3 goals for 6 points, while the center O'Brien canned 2 goals and 2 foul tosses for another 6 points.  The leading scorer for the Blue Devils was the center West who swished 5 goals and 2 fouls for a game high of 12 points.

Forward Captain Baldwin of Midvale starred with 19 points and the other forward Zucal tallied 11 markers.  Forward Henderson and center Gaskill looked good for the losers both on defense and offense.

30 - Midvale Sends Augusta Down In Flames 44-8 (3-7-30)

DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) had practically no opposition in Augusta and won easily by a whopping 36 points.  The Augusta Blue Devils made only 3 field goals and all of them were chalked up by forward Brown, in sensational overhead style.  So close was Midvale's guarding that Augusta got only 17 shots at the basket and all were taken from beyond the foul line.  Midvale held the opposition scoreless in the 1st quarter and to 3 points in the second.  They were also held scoreless in the 4th session.

Head Coach Paul Roby started sending in his 2nd stringers as early as the 1st period and before the game had progressed beyond the middle of the 3rd quarter had an entire team of substitutes on the floor.  The game was uninteresting from the standpoint of the fans' viewpoint and Midvale had little opportunity to really demonstrate their class because of the weak opposition.  The Augusta boys never gave up the ship; although, it was apparent that all was lost, after the 1st few minutes.

30 - West Lafayette Clips Gnaden In OT 30-29 (3-7-30)

DOVER - Playing unlike the county champions they are, the Gnadenhutten Indians (3-1) lost out in the 1st game of the Class B District Sectional at Legion Hall last night by 1 point in overtime.  The West Lafayette Generals, a team that appears to have little in the way of a basketball machine administered the defeat by a plucky last minute stand.  The count was knotted at 28 when the gun cracked.  The Indians held a 2 point lead with less than 13 seconds to go when Stone, Lafayette forward, slipped under the bucket for the tying basket.

Ed Riley, Gnaden Forward, was fouled shortly after the overtime period opened and made good on the shot.  Then McAllister with a minute to go, dropped in a sucker shot for the one-point margin for the Generals.  Gnadenhutten had several opportunities to win the ball game by slowing up their offense and playing a stalling game, but they elected to carry the ball to their opponents and lost out.  Gaskill, giant center, was just about the whole Lafayette team.  His under the basket efforts netted him 7 field goals and 2 foul tosses for 16 points.  Riley and forward Denver Kohl were the leading stars for the Indians.  Perry Ames, Gnaden guard, who was playing a bangup defensive game, was jerked from the lineup and replaced by Vernon Petry.

30 - Eastern Ohio District Class B Tournament 1930

DOVER - Sixteen teams, representing 6 counties, will start the battle that may lead to the right to compete for the State Class B Basketball Championship at Columbus late this month, here Friday, in the tournament for the Northern Section of the Eastern Sectional.  The race will be narrowed to 4 teams by Saturday night and these 4 will compete in the Class B finals at Dennison, Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15, with the 4 teams that will qualify in a similar meet at Cambridge this week-end.  The Gnadenhutten Indians, Tuscarawas County Class B Champions, has the honor of playing the 1st game as the result of the drawings held last night at the American Legion Building where the tgurney will be held.  The play the West Lafayette Generals at 7PM Friday.

From all indications, the Class B tournament for the northern section of the Eastern Sectional of Ohio here Friday and Saturday, will be one of the most successful ever held in this section.  The drawings, made last Monday, are ideal, from the standpoint of close matches and crowd pleasers.  Three games are on tap for each session, Friday and Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening.  Four teams will qualify for the finals to be held at Dennison Friday and Saturday March 14-15.  Carrollton is being favored by many fans as one of the best teams in the event and a sure qualifier.  But, they stack up against strong opposition right off the bat in Newcomerstown.

The Midvale Blue Devils and Gnaden may stage their county tournament final battle all over again in case they win in their 1st games.  Gnadenhutten opens the tourney at 7PM Friday against West Lafayette, a tough aggregation and Midvale plays at 8PM Friday against the Augusta Blue Devils.  If both win they tangle at 4PM Saturday.

30 - All-Tournament Honors 1930

DOVER - Captain Ed Riley of Gnaden led the way in individual scoring during the county tournament with a neat 34 point total.  He scored 15 against Tuscarawas, 7 against Dundee and 12 against Midvale in the finals, with Fabiano, all-tournament guard of last season, covering him.  Zucal, Midvale, scored 25 points mainly through his height, which enabled him to bat in buckets his mates failed to sink.  West, Midvale, chalked up 24 markers and Baldwin, of the same team, was close behind with 23.  John Heid, Strasburg, made 20 and Denver Kohl, Gnadenhutten, scored the same amount.  Fred Mears of Strasburg, made 20 points in 2 games.  The Gnadenhutten Indians had the best team record, scoring 86 points to 64 for their opposition, while the Midvale Blue Devils scored 87 points to 70 for their foes.

30 - Gnadenhutten Wins 8th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (3-1-30)

Gnadenhutten Indians 1930 Tournament Champions:  #6 Clark - #13 Riley - #10 Kohl - #12 Ames - #8 Jack Hearing - #7 Kennedy - #9 C. Fox - #11 Petry - #1 E. Fox - #5 Carson and Head Coach Mead.

Midvale Blue Devils 1930 Tournament Runner-Ups:  #5 Walker - #4 Baldwin - #11 West - #6 Zucal - #10 Fabiano - #7 Stevenson - #8 Pizzini - #9 Cunningham - #12 Riker - #3 White - Martinelli and Head Coach Roby.

DOVER - Not yet have the thrills of this glorious county tournament subsided.  It's all over, but the shouting goes on.  Gnadenhutten (3-0) (10-6) came in like a lion just as did the famous month of March, Saturday and won The Daily Reporter Trophy from Midvale (2-1) (4-3) in the championship game.  The final victory read 28-24.  That's the story in brief.  But, the story behind it all reads like none other in county tournament history.  Pitted against a team generally reputed to be a better cage machine and a sure shot for the title, the boys from Gnaden swept to triumph made sweeter by the rumor that they were expected to lose.  They deserved the trophy.  It was fitting that it should be presented to them, because they outplayed Midvale and displayed basketball such as their followers have not seen from them this season.  Such a climax to a great tournament!  Gnaden trailing, then forging ahead.  The score never differing more than 2 points until the final minute.  Both teams playing like demons.  Sensational baskets slipping through the hoop.  Brilliant defensive work from the guards.  Accurate passing.  In fact, it was just about everything, from the fans' standpoint, that a game could be.

The Indians' greatest problems were stopping West, Midvale center and those under the basket shots of Zucal, giant forward, were met like nobody's business.  Perry Ames, Gnaden guard, was the lad who should be given credit for his little work; although, Denver Kohl, his center, aided in checking West.  West scored 3 and Zucal 5 points, respectively.  In other tournament games, both had run wild.  Captain Ed Riley, forward, pitted his game against Fabiano, Midvale's all-tournament guard of last season, so successfully that he scored 5 field goals and 2 foul tosses for 12 points and won high individual honors for his struggle.

The victors earned that title by playing brilliant basketball.  And, don't get the idea that the Blue Devils were off form.  They played the same type of game that carried them past Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Strasburg.  They simply were beaten by a team that was better that night.  There's no dishonor in that.  For the losers, Baldwin, forward, was the outstanding performer.  He was all over the floor, in every play and when all seemed lost in that 3rd quarter, he put his team back in the running with difficult buckets.  In all, he sank 5 field goals for 10 points.

Midvale led 9-8 at the 1st quarter, but the champions had forged ahead to lead 16-14, at halftime.  The nip and tuck 3rd period found the Blue Devils back in front 22-20.  The last half was the most hectic.  The brief ceremony at halftime, when The Reporter Trophy was shown to the crowd and announced as the prize to the winner seemed to inspire both teams to greater efforts.

Gnaden dashed to the fore with 2 baskets and then Baldwin swung into action with 2 from the side and Fabiano added one to knot the count at 22.  All 3 of Midvale's buckets came in a period of 45 seconds.  West broke the tie with a neat fielder and Riley knotted it up again.  Kohl gave the champs a 2 point advantage with a bucket and Baldwin almost immediately tied it up again.  Forward Jack Hearing was jerked in favor of Clarence Fox and came right back into the game within a minute to immediately sink a beautiful bucket from center-court and give Gnadenhutten a 26-24 advantage.  That was enough to win the ball game, but Riley added another just before time was up.  Gnaden won the right to compete in the final game by disposing of Tuscarawas 33-16, Friday afternoon and Dundee, that team of fightin' fools, 27-22, Saturday afternoon.

It was the 2nd consecutive year that the Midvale Blue Devils have gone to the final and been nosed out.  Last year Bolivar, eliminated by Strasburg in their 1st encounter this season, defeated Midvale in the championship tilt.  It was the Gnadenhutten Indians' 1st county championship, but they will be dangerous from now on.  All their players return to the team next season.  Both the champs and Midvale play in the District Class B event here this weekend.

30 - Gnaden Stops Dundee 27-22 (3-1-30)

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (9-6) took-out the Dundee Bulldogs (2-1) (4-8) in the 2nd afternoon game of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament by 5 points.  The Indians put themselves in the position of playing against the Blue Devils for the county basketball championship this evening.  Gnaden has been runner-up twice, while Midvale has won the runner-up spot once and that was just last year.  Neither has won the county championship.  Gnaden was one of 6 teams who entered the tournament at the very begining in 1923.  Midvale began tournament play in 1928.

Jack Hearing, #8 forward,  was the sensation in this game.  All in the 2nd half.  He dumped in buckets from every spot on the floor.  Five of them went in and 4 foul tosses gave him a total of 14 points.  Perry Ames, #12 guard, played his steady defensive game and #13 Ed Riley, forward, as usual, was the floor play leader and got the points when they were needed.  Sliffe, #5 forward, and #3 Bradley, forward and #4 Haager, guard, looked the best for the losers.

30 - Midvale Knocks-Off Strasburg 27-23 (3-1-30)

DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (2-0) (4-2) eliminated the Strasburg Tigers (1-1) (18-5) in the 1st afternoon game of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament by 4 points.  The Tigers' Junior John Heid #5 in scoring and the floor work of #7 Senior Fred Mears, one of the smoothest performers in the tournament, kept Strasburg in the running.  Senior Wilson Dreher #2, did not start the game, but made things hum when he did get into the fray in the 2nd half.  With his team behind, he broke for the basket beautifully 3 times in succession to bring the score on a more even basis.

Zucal, #6, and #11 West, the 2 giant Midvale scoring aces, were up in the air and shooting over the heads of the Tiger Defense.  Each chalked up 4 baskets and West also had a foul toss for 8 and 9 points, respectively.  If either of these 2 players could have been stopped, Strasburg might have won.  Dreher played a great defensive game, but didn't get into the game soon enough to make amends for what already had been done.  Fabiano, #10, was all over Mears keeping his scoring down, but the clever forward was the key man in the Tiger passing attack.  It was a great struggle for Strasburg in a tough battle and undoubtably one of the 3 best outfits in the tournament.

MIDVALE BLUE DEVILS - 27

Baldwin 3-0-6
Zucal 4-0-8
West 4-1-9
Fabiano 1-1-3

30 - Huge Crowds Storm Legion Hall

DOVER - What a tournament folks, what a tournament!  The fastest and best games in years, so they say.  Anyhow, Dundee, Gnadenhutten, Strasburg and Midvale came through unscathed yesterday in the opening day of play and by tonight, it will all be over but the shouting with a new county champion named and the beautiful Daily Reporter Trophy awarded.

For thrills and startling upsets, hats are off to the game crew from Dundee.  Underdogs at the start, they mowed down Mineral City 24-23 and then tackled Port Washington, winning 28-26.  They clash this afternoon with Gnadenhutten at 3:30 in the 2nd semi-final game.  Dundee plays hard basketball, but their attack is far from being the smoothest in the tournament.  Their utter determination to win, their plugging, have brought them to the semi-finals.  And, one mustn't forget forward Sliffe a slim little lad, who brought that Port Washington game out of the fire in the final minutes.  Port Washington earned the right to be eliminated by Dundee by the disposing of Baltic 29-21, in a well played tilt.  Gnaden easily took the measure of Tuscarawas 33-18, earning the right to compete in the semi-finals against Dundee with no further effort.  Speaking of the thrills of this tourney, Strasburg and Bolivar, two arch rivals furnished more than plenty of action in the 1st game of the evening session.  Bolivar led all the way until middle of the final period when Strasburg took a 25-24 advantage.  And then, the Tigers began clicking like mad.  They tossed in basket after basket.  Strasburg found themselves on the long end of a 36-25 score.  The expected struggle between Midvale and Sugarcreek-Shanesville turned out to be something else again.  The big, fast Midvale crew easily took the measure of the smaller fighting opposition 35-19.  Midvale and Strasburg, probably the 2 best cage machines in the tournament, meet in the 1st semi-final game this afternoon at 2:30.

The afternoon session was well attended, but in the evening...no such crowd has ever stormed the Legion Hall gates as this season!  They were packed and standing on the rafters and sitting on the floor.  Downstairs, tournament officials found it necessary to quit selling tickets and turn some 200 fans away.  Referee "Monk" Gross, who by the way was working one grand tournament from the standpoint of officating had difficulty in making his whisle heard above the roar of the crow.  Cheerleaders worked the fans into chants for their respective teams.  Such enthusiasum!  Men borrowed each other's hats to crumple and tear.  Women and girls and there were plenty of them, dropped their vanity cases.  High school boys got excited over what their team was doing or not doing and stood up in front of irate fans behind them.  Everywhere was confusion except out on the playing floor where teams battled with the best that was in them for the honor and the trophy that signifies champions.

30 - Dundee Clips Port 28-26 (2-28-30)

DOVER - The Dundee Bulldogs (2-0) (4-7) sprang their 2nd surprise in their final game of yesterday's play in taking the Port Washington Eagles (1-1) (2-4) to task by edging the Flyers by 2 points in a thrilling encounter.  It was thrilling because the score was so close, but the game itself was spoiled when speaking of good basketball.  The Bulldogs' #5 Sliffe best and clever little forward goes the laurels of this game.  His baskets in the final quarter after the Eagles had gone ahead through the brilliant play of #13 forward Earl Wheeland and #6 forward John Bond, gave Dundee the victory.  Sliffe slipped away from the Port Washington guards twice in those final quarters with basket shots and at top speed as he had 13 points, 4 field goals and 5 foul shots.

Dundee's Haager #4 guard, played his usual hard floor game, but dropped the ball too many times for the good of his team by excessive dribbling.  In fact, both teams somewhat spoiled chances for good basketball by dribbling the ball.  Wheeland was again the main threat for Port sinking 4 field goals in the final half and had to put his team out front many times; although, Dundee had led most of the way.

DOVER - The big fast Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) (3-2) trampled the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' game little crew (0-1) (7-5) in the 2nd evening game by 16 points.  The losers were outclassed both in team play and size, but put up a game fight against the heavy odds.  The Pirates were held to 1 point in the 2nd quarter, lwhile lthe winners were piling up 8, giving them a 19-3 advantage.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville made only 1 field goal the entire 1st half.

Bad foul tossing cost the losers plenty of points.  B. Hostetler, #5 forward, made only 4 out of 13 and the rest of the team had a poor percentage as well.  Hostetler played a brilliant floor game and was so clever that Blue Devil guards fouled him often.  For the winners, #10 guard Fabiano, demonstrated that he is just about one of the best guards in the tournament, despite a shoulder injury.  Zucal, #6 Forward and #11 center West each made 6 baskets.

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (0-1) (10-6) lost a rough battle to the tough Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (18-4) in the 1st game of the evening sessions.  The 11 point victory is no indication of the direction of the struggle for the Cardinals had the game won until nearly the end of the game with only 6 minutes to go.  The tournament champs of last year flashed a brilliant attack at the start as they jumped away to a commanding lead of 17-7.  Then came the 2nd quarter when the Tigers cut it down to 19-16 at the half.  At the 3rd quarter Bolivar was still leading 24-23.  Shortly after the opening of the final period, #5 Junior John Heid sank 2 goals in rapid succession from under the bucket to give the ultimate winners a 25-24 lead.  The 1st time they had been out in front during the fracas.  The crowd went wild as Strasburg proceeded to sink basket after basket over the heads of the demoralized Cardinal defense.

Senior forward Fred Mears, #7 and center John Heid were the stars for Strasburg as the former hit for 7 baskets and 2 fouls for 16 points passing Gnaden's Riley when he hit 15 points in his game against Tuscarawas and had held the tournament's high game for 1930.  Heid chalked up 10 points by hitting 5 goals.  Haueter, #4 forward, #2 center Kries and #7 guard Dayton all had 6 points each for the Cardinals.
