53 - Strasburg Wins 5th Consolation Division Crown In Overtime 71-66 (2-21-53)

Sophomore Forward Jerry Haswell of the Straburg Tigers and chosen All-County 2nd Team in the County League scored 23 points in their win over the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 71-66 last night to win their 5th Consolation Division Crown in the 31st Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament.  He now has 49 points in 4 games and has a 12.3 per game average  Jerry was injured during his 2nd game in the tourney after he had scored 3 points and missed his next game entirely.

DOVER - The Stone Creek Golden Panthers (2-2) (23-38) had 30 seconds to score at least one point and upset the Strasburg Tigers (4-1) (21-4) (85-23) for the 2nd time in the tournament, but the Golden Panthers wiled away the golden opportunity as they pulled a stall in the last 30 seconds with the score tied 64-64 and then went into overtime.  The Tigers then went on to sweep the triumph into the record books with a tremendous surge in the overtime period as the Panthers faded out of the picture.

Fifth-Year Head Coach Don Martin's crew put on a burst late in the 1st quarter and pulled away 18-11 at the 1st quarter buzzer.  In the 2nd frame, the rally was continued as the Orange and Black roared into a 15-point lead at the midway mark 31-16 before Stone Creek's "Big Three" traded 6 field goals to 2 to make the halftime margin 35-26 with the Bengals on top.  Sophomore forward Jerry Haswell, who really moved at top form along with Senior forward Jim Weinmann and Junior guard Eldon (Zeke) Mullett in the 1st half, led the Strasburg Tigers offense in the 3rd stanza as the Tigers pulled away 52-42 at the far turn.  Zeke Mullett was whistled out of the contest with 15 seconds left in the 3rd period.

Sizzling down the stretch like a flow of hot lava, the Golden Panthers awakened the crowd with a drive that was a trademark of underdog teams in the tournament.  Sophomore center Bill Jones, Senior guard Carl Poland and Senior forward Jerry Gasser chipped in 3 field goals before Weinmann tallied for the Bengals and after Jones had traded another fielder with Weinmann.  Junior forward Jim Lorenz tossed in 2 straight before Jones locked up the contest tighter than a drum at 56-all.  The game settled down into a red-hot duel with Lorenz notching the tying basket at the 55-second mark and then failing on a free throw toss.  The Tigers had one more crack, but a fumbled ball gave the sphere to the Panthers and Stone Creek stalled the game away.

Haswell poured in 23 points, Weinmann 20, Sophomore center Eldon (Goose) Von Kaenel 12 and Mullett 10 for the Bengals.  Jones hit 22 points in a losing cause for the Golden Panthers with Lorenz getting 18 and Gasser 12 in a brilliant contest against the Champions.

Strasburg won their only clash with Stone Creek 61-55 during the regular season.
