53 - Gnaden Drops Stone Creek 60-53 (2-19-53)

The surprising Gnadenhutten Indians, whose Senior Forward Leo Porter scored 18 points in leading his team to a 60-53 win over the Stone Creek Golden Panthers, remains unbeaten in tournament play.  Porter has 33 points in 2 games for a 16.5 game average.

DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils and Gnadenhutten Indians emerged as the finalists in the 31st Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament in last night's action before a jam-packed house at Memorial Hall, but it was the Port Washington Purple Riders' finish that stole the show.  The Purple Riders nipped the Tuscarawas Broncos at the wire with a surge that touched off an answering spark in the crowd as they upset the favorites 67-65 in the fading seconds.

Just about the time the Riders were waxing hot, the Port Washington school caught fire, but the blaze was quickly brought under control, something that Tusky couldn't do to 7th-Year Head Coach Bray Toot's chargers.  Midvale spiked the Baltic Eagles 60-50 in a hard-fought game that was never in the bag until the last minute and Gnaden's Indians reached the finals and a sure trip to the Sectional Tournament by turning back the Golden Panthers 60-53.

Tonight's 2 Consolation Division tussles will find the Strasburg Tigers and the Eagles clashing at 7:30 with Port and Stone Creek meeting at 8:45.  The 2 winners will play the preliminary game Saturday night to earn the right to the Consolation Division Crown and a berth in the Sectional Tournament alongside of the Blue Devils and Indians.

The Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (8-14) (49-41), who earned the right to enter the semi-final by downing Tuscarawas 65-56 last week, tomahawked the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (1-1) (22-37) early in the contest and 6th-Year Head Coach Ken Newlon's chargers never quite recovered from that initial blow as they lost their scalps to the Tribe.  With all but Senior guard Ed Minteer joining the parade in the opening minutes, the Indians showed some of the accuracy that won them their 1st tournament victory as it pulled ahead 11-2.  The Golden Panthers, who just couldn't get the lid off the basket, pulled up within 7 points 16-9 at the end of the quarter.

Stone Creek zipped back into the contest within 3 points, 21-18 midway in the 2nd frame, but Senior forward Leo Porter led the Tribe back out in front 29-21 at the half.  Junior forward Jim Lorenz and Sophomore center Bill Jones counted up 14 points in the 3rd stanza alone, but Gnadenhutten distributed 16 among its 5 starters and the Golden Panthers clipped off only 2 points as the Indians went into the stretch with a 45-39 edge.

Third-Year Head Coach Fritz Jacob's chargers began slowing the game down and going into a partial stall right at the onset of the final canto and were never in trouble, despite the loss of Porter and Senior center Carl Grossenbacher, while the Panthers were still in striking distance.  Lorenz led both teams with his 23 points with Jones getting 13 for Stone Creek.  Porter got 18 for the Tribe, but the distribution of 39 points almost evenly among the remaining starters was the key to the Gnaden victory.

In regular season games, Stone Creek whipped Gnaden at Gnadenhutten 69-55 and then went home to lick them a 2nd time...73-60.
