53 - Midvale Handles Baltic 60-50 (2-19-53)
The Midvale Blue Devils ace scoring machine, Senior Center Dick Tolloti, shook the nets for 28 points while leading the Blue Devils to a 60-50 victory over a stubborn Baltic Eagles team last night. Tolloti has accumulated 58 points in 3 games for the Diablos for a 19.3 game average. In regular season play, the center scored 40 points against the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates as Midvale prevailed 61-49.
DOVER - Seniors, guard Ron Harmon and center Dick Tolloti, setup shop and represented the Midvale Blue Devils (3-0) (18-6) (57-27) as a 2-man wrecking crew in turning back the Baltic Eagles, who came into the tussle with hopes high for a victory. The Blue Devils duo scored all of Midvale's 18 points in the very 1st quarter with Tolloti caging 12 and Harmon 6 points. If that wasn't enough, the win-punch of the Diablos tallied all but one of Midvale's points in the 2nd frame.
The Blue Devils took a 10-point lead in the 1st period, but the Eagles came back to close the gap to 18-12 at the end of the quarter. In the 2nd frame, Baltic ripped into the fray with a determined bid that saw Junior forward Tom Ott give them the lead 23-22 near the end of the quarter, but Tolloti canned 3 straight field goals to give the lead back to the Diablos 29-25 at the half. The game was fairly close throughout the 3rd stanza, but Midvale managed to keep the lead and hold a 43-39 advantage going into the final canto. Ott hooked one in to start off the proceedings in the final stanza and Senior guard John Torgler deadlocked the contest at 43-43 with 6:45 left to play.
Seniors, guard Don Graham and forward Bill Anderson, added a burst that put the Blue Devils back on top, but the Eagles were not out of it yet and pulled to 49-47 before Tolloti and Junior guard Wil DiGenova started adding the clinchers and Di Genova scoring just as the final buzzer sounded.
Tolloti scored 28 points and Harmon came in with 16 for Midvale, while Senior forward Paul Reidenbach, Ott and Senior center Jim Syler had 11, 13 and 12 respectively to lead Baltic. During the season, Midvale won 67-54 with Graham getting 24 points and Anderson picking up 15 for the Blue Devils.
