53 - Midvale Wins 6th Annual Tuscarawas County Tournament 76-63 (2-21-53)

Senior Guard Don Graham of the Midvale Blue Devils led his team to a 76-63 triumph over the Gnadenhutten Indians to capture the 31st Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament Crown.  It was the 6th time that the Blue Devils have done so.  Graham's 19 points in the game gives him a total of 59 points in 4 games for a 14.8 points per game average.

DOVER - First-Year Head Coach Bob Singerman's Midvale Blue Devils (4-0) (19-6) (58-27) gave another sparkling performance as they crushed the hopes of the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-1) (8-15) (49-42) by halting the Indian's drive and starting one of their own.  The Blue Devils were never out of the driver's seat which Senior forward Bill Anderson grabbed right at the outset.  The Tribe kept in hailing distance for most of the 1st quarter as the Devils eked out a 12-9 advantage.

The contest broke wide open in the 2nd frame as the Diablos, with Anderson exploding a potent punch, tallied 17 points, while the Indians were racking up 21, chiefly on the lead by Senior center Carl Grossenbacher and Junior guard Carl Gilmore.  Anderson threw in 13 points in the 2nd period and Midvale took a 39-30 lead at intermission.  Grossenbacher tossed in 9 and Gilmore 6 for Gnadenhutten.

Senior center Dick Tolloti began to figure in the scoring in the 3rd stanza after being held to but 4 points in the 1st half and Senior forward Leo Porter was blanked throughout the 3rd period.  With Tolloti and Graham, whose steady point-output was a feature attraction of the Blue Devils exhibition, holding the fort, as the Champions swept into a 58-44 lead at the far turn and the game was in the bag.  Gnaden spurted briefly at the outset of the final canto.  Graham, Junior guard Wil Di Genova and Tolloti put the finishing touches on the triumph by whipping the Devils into a 69-51 lead with time running out.

Graham was high scorer for the Diablos with 19 points as Anderson grabbed 17 and Tolloti 15.  Gilmore and Grossenbacher paced the Indians with 19 and 18 points respectively, while Porter caged 14, 5 in the last 35 seconds.

Midvale beat Gnaden 65-58 during the season.
