53 - Strasburg Blasts Gnaden 75-59 (2-26-53)

Fifth-Year Head Coach Don Martin guided the Strasburg Tigers to a 10-0 League Championship this year and ended the season at 17-3.  The Tigers went on to claim the Consolation Championship with a 71-66 win over the Stone Creek Golden Panthers in the 31st Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament with a 4-1 record and then moved into the Sectional Tournament where they handed the Gnadenhutten Indians a 75-59 loss as the Bengal record moved to 22-4.  By the way, Strasburg's only loss in the Tuscarawas County Touranament was also due to the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 62-53.

Junior Guard Eldon (Zeke) Mullett of the Strasburg Tigers led the Tigers to a 75-59 triumph over the Gnadenhutten Indians in their 1st Sectional Tournament game and led all scorers with 25 points.  Zeke now has 75 total tournament markers in 6 games for an average of 12.5 points per contest.

DOVER - The Dover St. Joseph Ramblers will make its bid in the Class B Sectional Tournament in Memorial Hall tonight when the festival goes into the 3rd round.  The Ramblers take on the Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves in the rubber game of the season with 2 brothers, Paul and Joe Drotovick, both coaches, matching strategy from the bench.

In the opener tonight, the Tuscarawas County Tournament Champions, the Midvale Blue Devils, will take on Holmes County's Champions, Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs.  Last night, 2 county teams got the heave ho as the Strasburg Tigers stunned the Gnadenhutten Indians 75-59 and the Killbuck Bucks (19-2) stopped the Dennison Railroaders (11-11) 70-68.  Earlier on Wednesday, February 25, opening night, the Big Prairie Lakeville Bulldogs (20-6) knocked off the Millersburg Knights (13-9) 56-52 and the Dellroy Blue Jets (7-18) lost to the Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves (9-8) 69-67.

Head Coach Don (play-by-play) Martin's Strasburg Tigers (5-1) (22-4) beat back the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-2) (8-16) in a 3rd stanza rally and then went on to rip the Indians with a fast-moving attack.  With Junior guard Eldon (Zeke) Mullett teaming up with Sophomore center Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel in the opening quarter, the Bengals rolled to a 21-11 lead.  Sophomore forward Jerry Haswell joined Mullett in the 2nd frame attack, but Senior forward Leo Porter threw in 11 points to help the Tribe get back in the contest as Gnaden trailed 36-28 at intermission.

Third-Year Head Coach Fritz Jacobs' chargers went on the warpath at the start of the 3rd period and came on with a will to deadlock Strasburg midway in the frame and push the Tigers to the limit before fading out of the picture entirely.  Porter, Senior center Grossenbacher and Senior guard Ed Minteer led the uprising as Gnadenhutten reorganized their Tiger hunting party.  With 4 minutes left to play, Minteer scored on a layup to put Gnaden ahead 42-41.  Senior forward Max Bonifant gave the lead back to the Bengals seconds later and Minteer deadlocked the game at 43-all with the 3:50 mark showing on the clock.

But the attack fizzled as Haswell and Bonifant cashed in on free throw shots and Mullett chipped in a field goal before Senior center Ted Gram cashed in on a foul shot for the Indians.  Strasburg went on to take a 53-44 lead at the far turn and then turned the game into its own front yard in the last canto with Junior center John Shetler and Mullett ripping the nets with points.  Mullett tallied 10 field goals and 5 free throws to lead Strasburg with 25 points, while Porter cashed in on 11 shorts from the field and 2 charity tosses for 24 markers.  The victory moved the Tigers into the Sectional Tournament finals on Saturday night against the winner  of tonight's game between the Midvale Blue Devils and Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs.

Strasburg ripped Gnadenhutten 65-58 during their only contest during the season.
