53 - Strasburg Closes Baltic's Season 61-43 (2-20-53)
Sophomore Center Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel of the Strasburg Tigers netted 17 points in a 61-43 Tiger win over the Baltic Eagles last night in a Consolation Division contest at Memorial Hall. Goose has a total of 57 markers in 4 games for a 14.3 points per game average.
Goose hooks one over the out-stretched hands of a Baltic defender in a Strasburg 18-point win last night.
DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (3-1) (20-4) (84-23) sent the hopes of the Baltic Eagles (1-2) (27-47) into a whirling tailspin as they grabbed a toe-hold in the late stages of the 1st quarter and steadily increased their advantage, while the Eagles fought doggedly on to the end in the latest Consolation Division game last night at Memorial Hall. The Tigers, with Junior guard Elden (Zeke) Mullett and Sophomore center Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel working smoothly in a double pivot under the basket, were the hot shots in the Bengals offense that clipped the Flyers.
Baltic, with little Senior forward Paul Reindenbach staging almost a one-man show, couldn't seem to thread the hoop earlier; although, the team had their share of chances in staying with Strasburg most of the way. Strasburg moved out in front 16-9 at the end of the 1st quarter, but could do no better than break even with the determined Eagle cagers in the 2nd frame. The League Champions zipped into a 32-20 lead midway in the 3rd stanza, but were again no more than 9 points ahead, 37-28 at the start of the 4th canto.
Goose, Sophomore forward Jerry Haswell and Senior forward Max Bonifant poured in 12 points, while Sophomore guard Errol Jacobs was scoring 3 for Baltic and that was the beginning of the end. Reidenbach hurried here and there and was just about all over the floor as he threw in 3 field goals and 2 free throws, while fouling Mullett, who cashed in on the toss, in the last rally the Eagles could muster.
After the "mighty mite" had brought the count to 50-39, Strasburg took over and closed out with 11 straight points before the Flyers could score. Goose Von Kaenel tallied 17 points, while Mullett scored 16 and Haswell 12. Haswell made his 1st appearance since spraining an ankle against the Mineral City Tigers last week. Reidenbach was the only consistant scorer for Baltic as he tallied 7 field goals and 6 free throw tosses to account for 20 points in the Eagles total.
In the only game of the regular season, Strasburg handed Baltic a 69-53 loss.
