29 - Bolivar Takes Out Baltic 22-9 (2-23-29)
DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (2-0) defeated the Baltic Eagles (1-1) by 13 points at the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament at American Legion Hall Saturday afternoon and won the right to meet the winner of the Strasburg-Midvale battle for the county championship at 8PM tonight at the same place. The Cardinal defense allowed the Eagles only 3 field goals this afternoon. Guard Widder starred for the winners.
Bolivar led at the end of the 1st quarter by a score of 5-4. Both teams played good defensive ball and Miller, Baltic guard, kept Widder, Bolivar scoring ace, pretty well covered. However, Widder was the 1st to score, connecting from action underneath after both teams had missed 2 foul tosses. Guard Harlan Richardson hit a pair of free throws to tie the count. Forward Ott put Baltic in the lead 4-2 with a shot from the corner then Cardinal forward Kreis took the lead with a foul and a field basket. At half time the score was 12-4, Bolivar leading. The Baltic boys had been unable to penetrate the stout defense of guards Lash and Shultz of Bolivar, while Widder broke lose for 2 field goals and Kreis added a field goal and a foul. Baltic had only one chance to score that coming on Paul Sheetz's try from the foul line. The Eagles added 2 more points in the 3rd period, while Bolivar counted 6 more to take a lead of 18-6 as the 2 squads entered the final stanza. Shultz got 2 action buckets for Bolivar, while Widder added the other. Sheetz scored Baltic's only basket of the period and also added a foul shot.
