30 - Legion Hall Scene Of 2-Day Basketball Event

DOVER - They're off!  That's what they say in racing when the barrier is sprung.  That's what they'll say tomorrow at 2PM when the Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament gets under way at Legion Hall.  Exactly 10 teams, all with fairly equal chances, will be in the competition when it starts.  By Saturday evening the tournament will have simmered down to the 2 outfits which have gone through unscathed.  To the winner of that final game will go the beautiful Daily Reporter Trophy.  Both the winner and the runner-up will also be eligible to participate in the 1st round of the District Class B Tournament here Saturday, March 8th.  Interest in this annual affair is high and indications are that huge crowds will attend all sessions.

The Daily Reporter Trophy which has been on display during the past week, in the Ress Brothers Cigar Store on Factory Street, stands 19 inches high and is of plated silver.  A full length model of a basketball player leaping high into the air with the ball on outstretched fingers is mounted on the base.  It will make a valuable addition to the trophy case of any high school.  Ress Brothers have taken great pains to advertise the county tournament.  An attractive window display with the trophy in the center containing pictures of each of the 10 teams entered, has attracted much attention during the week.   Ress Brothers are also donating programs for the tournament.

A unique feature about the tournament is that it brings together in the 1st game for both teams, the Bolivar Cardinals, the team that copped the tournament last year and the Strasburg Tigers, winners of the county league race this year.  Strasburg finished on top only after one of the most bitter campaigns in recent years.  It all depended on a postponed game with Bolivar and they came through with a one point victory.  If they had lost the championship would have been shared by Strasburg, the Gnadenhutten Indians and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.

Three weeks ago it looked like Strasburg would go through the league season undefeated.  Then Gnadenhutten gave the dope bucket a terrific kick by handling the Strasburg boys a 21-20 defeat on the Strasburg court.  Hope rose high among the other teams.  Bolivar made it soar even higher by taking a non-league game on the Strasburg court, 20-19.  However, Strasburg won undisputed right to the title by defeating Bolivar on the latter's court in the final game of the league.  Last season Bolivar staged a thrilling finish to nose out the Midvale Blue Devils in the finals and capture The Reporter Cup, emblematic of the county tournament championship.  The score was 26-24.  Bolivar came through to finals last year by defeating the Dundee Bulldogs, 25-15 and the Baltic Eagles 22-9.

One of their men, Shulty, still playing was named guard on the 1st tournament team.  Other all-tournament selections last year who will again perform are:  Fabiano, Midvale guard, Baldwin, Midvale guard and Dreher, Strasburg guard.  Bolivar was eliminated by Coshocton Sacred Heart and Midvale after drawing a bye defeated Malvern to earn the right to play in the finals at Dennison.  At Dennison the Midvale boys were ousted by Millersburg.

30 - Eighth Class B Basketball Tournament Fan Favorites

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (7-2), so it appears, was favored by Dame Fortune, that fickle goddess of sports, in the drawings for the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament here Friday and Saturday.  Gnaden, providing they stop the Tuscarawas Broncos (2-7) in the 1st encounter at 1PM Friday, will not be forced to play again until 3:30PM Saturday.  The Indians also had the advantage in the draw of being selected in what looks like the weaker bracket.  By virtue of their luck they have an excellent chance of coming through to the finals or semi-finals.

What a battle will wage in that lower bracket where 4 of the toughest teams are clustered!  Right off the bat the Strasburg Tigers (8-1) and the Bolivar Cardinals (3-6), each of whom has defeated the other by 1 point this season, meet at 7PM Friday.  Then the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (7-2) and the Midvale Blue Devils (5-3) tangle at 8PM.  Both of these struggles are toss-ups.  The 2 winners meet at 2:30PM Saturday.  These teams in the upper bracket are evenly matched too.  Take the Dundee Bulldogs (2-7) and the Mineral City Tigers (3-6).  They officially open the tourney at 2PM Friday.  And then the Baltic Eagles (3-5) and Port Washington Purple Riders (4-5)  tangle in another hard-to-judge affair.

Anyhow, who can tell what a team will do in a tournament?  Some of the outfits that finished close to the bottom in the regular league season have just started to hit their stride.  Others are "tournament" teams and do their best work when under high pressure and with the championship of the county at stake as well as for the prize such as being offered by the Daily Reporter.  All indications point to huge crowds at the 2-day session at Legion Hall.  Everything is being done to make the tournament the same success it has been in former years.  Strasburg by virtue of their fine achievement in winning, will be a favorite to cop the tourney.  Also finding favor with the fans throughout the county are Midvale, Gnadenhutten and Sugarcreek-Shanesville as well as Bolivar, last year's tournament champions.  The Bolivar team has been crippled by practically the entire season and may be all set to hand out some surprises this Friday and Saturday.  And, maybe a dark horse will come through.  Who can tell?

FINAL 1930 LEAGUE STANDINGS

1.  Strasburg Tigers 8-1 .889

29 - Millersburg Takes-Out Midvale 33-24 (3-8-29)

DENNISON - The Midvale Blue Devils (3-2) were put out of the running in the 2nd event of the afternoon in the District Class B Basketball Tournament with the Millersburg Knights taking the decision after 4 fairly fast quarters by downing the Devils by 9 points.

Although they led at the end of the 1st quarter 8-3, Midvale was unable to continue the early burst of speed, Millersburg taking them in the 2nd quarter which ended with Midvale on  the short end of a 17-13 count.  When the whistle sounded ending the 3rd period the count was Millersburg 23, Midvale 20.  Forward Captain Roy Smith of the Blue Devils had a great chance to keep his team in the lead in the 3rd period on fouls, but missed numerous shots from the free throw line.  He scored 6 out of 17 attempts.  Center Rumbaugh scored highest for the Knights with 4 field goals, while his teammate Forward Glasgo was with him with the same total.  Bell and Strock, both Millersburg guards, were ejected from the game in the 4th quarter on personal fouls.  This ends the run for the Tuscarawas County State title...

29 - Midvale Eliminates Malvern 25-21 (3-2-29)

DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) defeated the Malvern Green Hornets by 4 points in the final and 10th game of the Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament at American Legion floor Saturday evening.  Despite the close score the affair was rather slow and uninteresting in view of the large crowd that attended the tournament.  The Green Hornets who were expected by most fans to offer feeble resistance to the Blue Devils entry, presented a snappy and fighting squad of players.

The Midvale cagers led 6-2 at the 1st period and the half ended in a 9-9 deadlock.  The 3rd quarter saw Midvale again ahead 15-14.  The final stanza showed Midvale played hard and fast to beat their scrappy and menacing opponents by 2 baskets.  Although probably not a better team, Malvern was a more balanced quintet than the victors.  Midvale guard Roy Smith and center Zucal who together gathered 18 markers, were the main cogs in Midvale's combine with 8 and 10 points, respectively.  Rohrer, Malvern forward, was high for his team with 7 points.  The Midvale Blued Devils move on to the Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament in Dennison.

29 - Sacred Heart Drops Bolivar 29-25 (3-2-29)

DOVER - Sacred Heart of Coshocton eliminated the Bolivar Cardinals (4-1) in a thrilling up-hill battle in the 2nd round.  In the 9th game, the parochial boys used the same style of play that they displayed to top the Newcomerstown Trojans earlier in the day, coming back strong in the last quarter to score 17 points to Bolivar's 4 and clinch the melee.

The Cardinals started off with a 5-4 edge over the Catholics in the 1st quarter and increased their lead  to 17-10 at halftime and 21-12 at three quarters.  Then in the final period, Coshocton pulled together sinking goal after goal, while Bolivar fought vainly to stop their mad rush,  With 1 minute to  play and the score at 25-all, Kenney, Sacred Heart guard, dropped 2 fielders through the nets to put the game on ice.  Then with but 3 seconds left, Bolivar called time out for the 3rd time that period, and when play resumed the game, the beaten birds launched a desperate attempt for victory before the gun announced their elimination.

Every member of the Bolivar crew played in top form Saturday night, but the even scoring machine of the Catholics proved too much for them.  Pete Saad, forward, was Coshocton's outstanding player.  Shulty, Cardinal guard, was high point man of the game with 13 points.

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (4-0) eliminated the Mt. Pleasant Mounties by 2 points in the final game (game 6) of the 1st round of the Sectional Class B Tournament Saturday afternoon in one of the most thrilling games staged at the auditorium during the day.  In the last 2 minutes of the game the score read 18-16, while during the former quarters the Cardinals held a long lead over the losers.

The 1st frame of the battle ended 7-4 in favor of Bolivar.  At the half time score read 11-4.  During the 3rd period Mounties scored 11 points, while the Cardinals measurd the hoop for 5.  Mt. Pleasant scored 7 field goals during the game and the winners scored but 5 making the rest of their points on free throws.  Widder, Cardinal guard, was high for the winners with 11 markers to his credit.  Sommers, Mountie forward, scored high for the losers with 4 field goals for 8 points.

29 - Sectional Tournament - Bolivar/Midvale

These two striking pictures of Roy Smith, Midvale Captain and forward, the outstanding player in Tuscarawas County's Class B District Tournament here last Saturday show Smith as a determined everfighting cageman.  Smith led all players in Class B scoring with 30 points in 3 games despite a bad ankle.  He is without doubt the cleverest, trickiest and best master mind of any player in county Class B ball this season.  Fans will get another glimpse of Smith in the District Tournament here Saturday night when the Midvale Blue Devils go into action again in all endeavers to win their way to the Sectional Tournament at Dennison in March on the 8th and 9th.

DOVER - Fifteen Class B basketball teams from 6 different counties have been paired to meet in 11 games at American Legion Auditorium next Saturday morning, afternoon and evening in the Eastern Ohio Sectional Tournament.  Four teams remaining in the running at the close of Saturday night play, will participate in the semi-finals and finals of Class B tournament play at Dennison on March 8th and 9th.  The Midvale Blue Devils, runner-up in County Class B play here last Saturday, drew the only bye Tuesday night when drawings were conducted at Legion Hall under supervision of F.W. Blackstone, Dover High School Principal, in charge of the tournament.  The Bolivar Cardinals, winners of the county title, will meet the Mt Pleasant Mounties at 2PM on Saturday.  The fact that Midvale drew a bye means that team must only win one basketball game to win the right to go to Dennison the following week.  All other treams must win 2 games to get through the Saturday Tournament.  Midvale's 1st game will not come until the Saturday night at 9PM when they will stack up against the winner of the Warsaw-Malvern contest.

Should the Bolivar Cardinals walk off with glory over the Mount Pleasant cagers, they then will meet either the Newcomerstown Trojans or Coshocton Sacred Heart.  The Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers looks like a sure bet to get through the 1st round.  They are pitted against the PerryTownship cagers from Carroll County in their initial contest which will begin at 11AM Saturday.  Should St. Joseph survive they then will play the winner of the Millersburg-Dennison game.  First action of the tourney is to be just about the same time you'll be eating breakfast Saturday.  At 8AM Adena will play New Athens in the 1st game of the 1st round.  At 9AM Carrollton bucks up against Clark in the 2nd game then at 10AM the Dennison Railroaders clashes with Millersburg.  At 11AM St. Joseph cagers get into 1st action meeting the Perry Township quintet from Carroll County.  The Newcomerstown Trojans battle Coshocton Sacred Heart, a favorite, in the initial game of the afternoon, scheduled to begin at 1PM.  The Cardinals of Bolivar clashes with the Mounties of Mt. Pleasant then at 2PM and Warsaw meets Malvern at 3PM.  Midvale drew the 4PM bye.

At 4PM winner of the Adena-New Athens game will play the winner of the Carrollton-Clark contest, opening 2nd round of play.  At 7PM the winner of the Millersburg-Dennison game clashes with the winner of the St. Joseph-Perry Township contest.  At 8PM the winner of the Newcomerstown-Sacred Heart game meets the winner of the Bolivar-Mt. Pleasant rumble.  At 9PM Midvale will take on either Warsaw or Malvern in the final game.  Principal F.W. Blackstone has not announced the officials for the tournament, but said Tuesday that 2 officials are to be employed to work all games.

29 - All-Tournament Teams 1929

DOVER - With the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament battles over and the Bolivar Cardinals holding the cup of championship with the Midvale Blue Devils an unusually close runner-up, now comes the annual task of selecting a mythical all-tournament quintet.  During the 2 days of basketball play at American Legion Hall last week in which 100 boys from 10 schools cavorted the Legion court in uniform, there were many outstanding stars.  Perhaps the most outstanding player generally through the tournament was Senior forward Roy Smith and Captain of the team, who scored 30 points in 3 games to lead all players in scoring.  It was the stellar performance of Smith that paraded Midvale into the finals and it was his uncanny shooting that almost deliberately put Bolivar down in the final game.

For his work Smith is awarded the 1st forward position and named Captain of the all-tourney five.  At the other forward is placed Art "Dutch" Miller, diminutive Strasburg Tiger leader, who scored 27 points in 3 games, being held scoreless from action in only one, that against Midvale when Fabiano, Midvale guard, allowed him only 2 free throws.  Miller's scoring against Alvin Williams, Gnaden's great guard, was enough to put him on the all-tourney quintet.  Widder, of Bolivar, the mainstay of the championship aggregation, is chosen for center; although, he lines up at guard.  Widder was the 2nd high point man of the tournament with 28 points, 2 less than Smith and one more than Miller.  His ability to handle the ball, shoot from long or short range and his ability in general, wins him a berth as safely as Smith.  Widder is chosen for center, because of the fact that he operated on the floor as a center after the tip-off.  Lash, Bolivar's regular center, dropping back to a back-guard each time.  Then, too, Widder played center during one-half of the Bolivar-Dundee game.

Fabiano, Midvale guard, is selected 1st for a guard position.  He played consistently good on defense, holding the crack Miller, of Strasburg, to only 2 points in a semi-final game and allowed Elmer Harris, star forward of Mineral City, only one basket after he started watching him.  Harris scored 4 buckets against Midvale, but 2 were gotten off Morgan and one off Smith before Fabiano was assigned to guard him.  Shulty, scoring Bolivar guard, wins recognition as the assistant to Fabiano.  Shulty scored 15 points from his guard position in the 3 games and played remarkable defensive ball all through the tournament.

Laughlin, of Bolivar and Harris, of Mineral City, are named forwards on the 2nd mythical five.  Lash of Bolivar, is the center, mainly because he was the outstanding jumper in the tourney.  Baldwin, Midvale and Wil Dreher, Strasburg, are the 2nd team guard selections.

1ST TEAM

Forward - Al Smith, Midvale Blue Devils
Forward - Art "Dutch" Miller, Strasburg Tigers
Center - Widder, Bolivar Cardinals
Guard - Fabiano, Midvale Blue Devils
Guard - Shulty, Bolivar Cardinals

2ND TEAM

Forward - Laughlin, Bolivar Cardinals
Forward - Elmer Harris, Mineral City

29 - Bolivar Wins 7th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (2-23-29)

The Bolivar Cardinals played through 3 games at American Legion Hall Friday and Saturday, defeating the Dundee Bulldogs, Baltic Eagles and Midvale Blue Devils to win the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament for 1929.  Championship members of the team are:  Kienzie - Forward, Shulty - Guard, Dayton - Guard, Haueter - Forward, Kries - Forward, Lash - Center, Studer - Guard, Widder - Guard, Laughlin - Forward and Head Coach Birk.

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (3-0) carried off honors in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament at American Legion Hall Saturday night, defeating the Midvale Blue Devils (2-1) by only 2 points in the last minute of tournament play.  To the Cardinals goes the silver loving cup offered annually by The Daily Reporter.  Bolivar's victory over the boys of Head Coach Robey from Goshen Township was achieved in the 1st half when forward Captain Widder and his men piled up a decided lead over Midvale.  The latter aggregation took complete charge of the 2nd half, fighting a terrific uphill battle that reached the climax when forward Roy Smith, most versatile athlete of the  tourney, had to leave the floor on personal fouls.

It was by far the best contest of the 2-day tournament and was witnessed by a packed auditorium of fans that created a bedlam with their cheering.  Bolivar's victory came in the last 40 seconds of play when Widder tossed in a field goal after guard Shulty had missed a free throw that would have given Bolivar a one-point edge.  Captain Roy Smith of Midvale's team, almost single-handedly did the scoring that brought Midvale from the trailing end into a tie at 24-24 before he was forced out of the game.  Held scoreless through the 1st half but for a lone foul, tall, Smith came back with renewed determination in the 2nd period to score five field baskets and 2 more fouls, while his mates also counted 3 action shots.  The Cardinals looked the best of any time during the tourney in the 1st half against the down-county quintet.  In the initial quarter, they scored 12 points and held the Blue Devils to a trio of points that came on a field goal and a foul toss by center Zucal.  Bolivar scored 4 field goals and the same number of fouls in the opening quarter.

At half time Bolivar still held a big advantage with the score standing at 15-6.  Midvale's defense, ragged in the 1st period, tightened considerably in the 2nd quarter to allow Bolivar only a field goal and a foul, while Zucal scored another action shot for the Robeymen and Smith counted from the free throw line.  Bolivar increased their lead to 12 points early in the 3rd period before Midvale finally started hitting the hoop.  Zucal started the quarter off with his 3rd field goal, then forward Laughlin scored a pair of actions for Bolivar and Widder counted a foul to make the score 20-8.  It was the greatest advantage the Birkmen held during the contest.  Smith tossed one of 2 fouls, then dribbled  into a corner and potted a field goal with one hand.  He followed that shot a moment later with one from  half the floor's length to make the score 20-13.  Bolivar called time-out in an attempt to check the onrushing Miners.  After play was resumed Fabiano, diminutive Midvale guard, scored his only basket from close under and made the count 20-15 as the period closed.

Laughlin scored for Bolivar to open the last quarter.  Guard Baldwin scored from a corner for Midvale then Smith followed with one of 2 fouls that made Midvale 18 and put them within 4 points of Bolivar.  Smith scored again from long distance that made Midvale 20.  The shot was from 3 quarters length's of  the floor.  Shulty dribbled in for a Bolivar basket, then Smith scored another long distance shot to put his team within 2 points of the leaders.  Another basket by Smith, made when he dribbled down the side of the floor and cut over past 2 Cardinal defensive men, tied the count.  His leg cramped from the continuous playing with a badly sprained ankle.  Smith called time out with 2 minutes to play.  Then after resuming play for 2 minutes and 10 seconds, Smith fouled Shulty under the Bolivar basket and Shulty attempted the foul as Smith went out on personal fouls.  Shulty missed, Widder grabbing the ball and heaving it into the nets for an action shot that put the game on ice.  Midvale had the ball after that, but without Smith could not penetrate the Bolivar defense or score, nor get close enough to take any kind of a shot at the basket.

It was simply Bolivar's 5-man defense in the 1st half that prevented Midvale from scoring.  Long tosses too by the Midvale team, was intercepted time after time by Bolivar players, leading to scores for the latter outfit.  Perhaps what made Midvale come up in the final periods was the fact that 2 men were put in the corners drawing Bolivar guards over to enable Smith a clear alley-way down the middle.  Both teams will enter the Eastern District Class B Tournament at Legion auditorium next Saturday in which teams from 8 surrounding counties will participate.

29 - Midvale Breezes Past Strasburg 27-11 (2-23-29)

DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (2-0), dark horse entry, who Friday night upset all forecasts by defeating the Mineral City Tigers (0-1), county league champions (9-0), Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Strasburg Tigers (2-1) by 16 points and won the right to meet the Bolivar Cardinals (2-0) for the Class B High School County Championship at Legion Hall at 8PM tonight.  Both Bolivar and Midvale will enter the Class B District Tournament at Legion Hall next Saturday.  The defensive work of Midvale's guard Fabiano and the floor work of Captain forward Roy Smith kept the Tigers from its 3rd county championship.  Fabiano held Senior forward Art "Dutch" Miller, Strasburg's scoring ace, without a field basket.  Junior Fred Mears scored 3 of Strasburg's 4 field goals.

Head Coach Young's Tigers were trailing by a 4 point margin, 7-3, at the end of the 1st quarter.  It was a beautiful game, faster than any previous encounter of the meet.  Strasburg drew 1st blood when Senior center Wayne Myers scored from underneath, but a foul by Blue Devils guard Baldwin and then a fielder from the same lad gave Midvale the lead, 3-2.  Fans whooped it up and cheers were as hotly contested as the game.  Miller tied the count with a foul then shots from the field by Baldwin and Smith put the down county team in front.  Strasburg added only 1 point in the 2nd quarter coming on a foul toss by Miller.  The Midvale crew led by Smith boosted their total to 13 points, the half ending 13-4.  After Miller's foul shot Smith caged a field goal to give Midvale a lead of 9-4 as the 2nd quarter opened.  Mears held on the side lines by Coach Young then replaced Pingstock at forward for Strasburg.  Morgan, Tiger forward, added a foul shot then center Zucal tossed a pair of free ones.  Smith ended the scoring with another foul throw after Mears missed a chance from  the gift line.

The 3rd quarter was closer, but didn't change things very much as far as Strasburg was concerned.  The miners were still leading by a count of 19-9.  The fine floor generalship of Roy Smith, Midvale's forward, kept the team ahead, cool but fighting.  Smith once during the 3rd quarter dribbled the length of the floor for a basket, going through the entire Strasburg team.  Morgan and Zucal started the period off by caging field  goals then Mears scored from action to make the count 17-6.  Miller scored one of 2 fouls and Mears another field goal then Smith ended the scoring for the period with a fielder which brought on the last period totally dominated by the Blue Devils.

29 - Bolivar Takes Out Baltic 22-9 (2-23-29)

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (2-0) defeated the Baltic Eagles (1-1) by 13 points at the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament at American Legion Hall Saturday afternoon and won the right to meet the winner of the Strasburg-Midvale battle for the county championship at 8PM tonight at the same place.  The Cardinal defense allowed the Eagles only 3 field goals this afternoon.  Guard Widder starred for the winners.

Bolivar led at the end of the 1st quarter by a score of 5-4.  Both teams played good defensive ball and Miller, Baltic guard, kept Widder, Bolivar scoring ace, pretty well covered.  However, Widder was the 1st to score, connecting from action underneath after both teams had missed 2 foul tosses.  Guard Harlan Richardson hit a pair of free throws to tie the count.  Forward Ott put Baltic in the lead 4-2 with a shot from the corner then Cardinal forward Kreis took the lead with a foul and a field basket.  At half time the score was 12-4, Bolivar leading.  The  Baltic boys had been unable to penetrate the stout defense of guards Lash and Shultz of Bolivar, while Widder broke lose for 2 field goals and Kreis added a field goal and a foul.  Baltic had only one chance to score that coming on Paul Sheetz's try from the foul line.  The Eagles added 2 more points in the 3rd period, while Bolivar counted 6 more to take a lead of 18-6 as the 2 squads entered the final stanza.  Shultz got 2 action buckets for Bolivar, while Widder added the other.  Sheetz scored Baltic's only basket of the period and also added a foul shot.

29 - Friday's Basketball Tournament Wrapup (2-22-29)

DOVER - Four teams that survived the 1st day of play in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament at the Legion Auditorium Friday were to battle Saturday afternoon and evening in the semi-finals and finals.  The Bolivar Cardinals (1-0) were to meet the Baltic Eagles (1-0) in the 1st semi-final contest and the Strasburg Tigers (2-0) was to hook up with the Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) in the 2nd semi-final game this afternoon with the 1st game starting at 1PM.

Over 1,000 fans, the largest crowd ever to witness a Tuscarawas County tourney watched 6 good basketball games Friday that included everything from a walkaway to a pair of unexpected upsets.  The biggest surprise of the tournament came Friday evening when Midvale defeated Mineral City 24-16.  It came after Mineral City, a tourney favorite, had played an entire season of 9 County League games and won the League undefeated.  They had met and defeated previously, everything possible for them to meet in tournament play.  Another upset came in the final of Friday's battles, Strasburg finishing ahead of Gnadenhutten 17-14.  The Indians had been regarded as probable finalists after finishing 2nd in the County League circuit next to the 1st place Mineral City Tigers.

Strasburg won the right to play Gnadenhutten after winning its 1st melee 37-12 from the Port Washington Purple Riders.  Gnaden got into the 2nd round by disposing of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 22-8 in their 1st game.  Bolivar had to step out to defeat what was looked upon as a weak Dundee Bulldog outfit.  The score was 25-15.  The Baltic Eagles won against the Tuscarawas Broncos by a count of 35-30 in the 1st of Friday evening's session.  It gave Baltic the right to meet Bolivar today in the semi-finals.

In Friday's play Senior Art "Dutch" Miller, small but able Strasburg forward, was the flashiest man on the Legion court.  Next to him was Roy Smith, versatile Midvale boy who led his team to the victory over Mineral City.  Widder of Bolivar, the mainstay of that outfit, was a 3rd outstanding performer, while Fabiano, of Midvale,  played one of the best offensive games of any guard in the tourney.  It was Paul Scheetz of Baltic, who performed the best of any center on the floor today.

29 - Strasburg Tops Gnaden In Thriller 17-14 (2-22-29)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (2-0) won its way into the semi-finals in the last game Friday evening by winning by 3 points over the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-1).  It was their 2nd tournament victory, Stasburg having disposed of the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1) earlier.  Packed with thrills from start to finish, it was perhaps the most hotly contested game of the tourney.  But the Tigers led all the way from the starting whistle,  the Indians threatening only in the last few minutes.  As he had led his team in their initial game of the meet, diminutive Art "Dutch" Miller, was the man  uncontrolled by Gnaden.  Miller scored 3 action shots and 6 fouls for Strasburg...a total of 12 points, in addition to holding Alvin Williams, Gnadenhutten guard who scored a lone field tally and a foul.

The 1st period saw Strasburg leading 6-1, Miller having scored all of his team's points on 2 action  shots and as many fouls.  Guard Paul Winsch scored on a foul for Gnadenhutten.  The half ended 11-6 with Strasburgs' Junior guard Wil Dreher and Miller hitting for 1 fielder each, while Junior Fred Mears tossed in a foul shot.  GuardsWilliams and Winsch of the Indians each had a fielder and Winsch also hit a foul toss.  At the end of the 3rd period, the Tigers had piled up a 9 point lead, being in front 17-8.  Hearing scored the only basket of the period for Gnadenhutten and Miller counted 4 fouls and Mears a long field basket for Strasburg.  Winsch scored 2 foul baskets and Jack Hearing a pair of fouls in the final quarter, but Gnaden could not overcome the lead Strasburg had maintained.

29 - Opps! Midvale Upsets League Champion Mineral City 24-16 (2-22-29)

The Mineral City Tigers, after taking the Tuscarawas County Basketball League Class B Championship by defeating every outfit in the county, lost out in the 1st game of the Class B tournament Friday to Midvale 24-16.  Tiger members:  Hothem (Forward), Markley (Forward), Eyster (Guard), Mathey (Guard), Elmer Harris (Forward), Gene Gordon (Center), Wagner (Center and Guard) and Head Coach W.E. Laws.

DOVER - After spending an entire season in the County Class B League during which time they swept all the teams in the League to win 9 games undefeated, Minderal City (0-1) fell the victim of tournament upset in its game with Midvale (1-0) at 8PM.  The Blue Devil win was by 8 points and Mineral City trailed the entire route.

Roy Smith, invincible Midvale forward, took charge of the situation from the initial tip-off and playing a cool conservative game, led his squadron to a 6-2 advantage over the Mineralites in the 1st period.  Midvale strengthened more than ever in the 2nd period to score 7 more points, while the Tigers counted only 2 more on a field goal, the half ending 13-4.  The 3rd quarter was even, both teams counting one action shot and 1 foul toss for 3 points.  The 3rd quarter ended 16-7, Midvale.  Mineral City made a desperate attempt to come back in the 4th, but their rally was too belated.  However, they outscored Midvale by 1 point.  Forward Elmer Harris and Gene Gordon played the best ball for Mineral City, while Roy Smith, aided by Morgan on the wing forward and Fabiano at guard, were Midvale's stars.  Fabiano played a great ball game and hurried Harris of Mineral City on all of his shots.

29 - Baltic Gets Past Tuscarawas 35-30 (2-22-29)

DOVER - Action aplenty came in the Baltic Eagles (1-0)-Tuscarawas Broncos (0-1) affair won by Baltic as the 1st on Friday evening's program by a 5 point margin.  It was an unexpected battle from the Broncos that the Eagles met, the boys from the lower end of the county playing the best they have at any time this season.  The game was always close.  At no time did Baltic hold such a decided advantage that they were conceded victory by the fan flock.  Harlan Richardson, Baltic guard, was the only man to go out on personal fouls.

The 1st period ended 9-5 with Tusky on the front end.  At halftime; however, the shooting of center Paul Sheetz and forward Lahm, had given Baltic the edge at 19-13.  The 3rd period saw Tuscarawas come back, but not enough to cut down the lead of the Rinehart coached aggregation.  It ended with Baltic in front 25-22.  Senior Van Adamson, star forward of the Broncos, threatened each time he got the ball and the team got within 2 points of Baltic with 2 minutes to play.  Altogether he counted 7 field goals and 2 fouls for a total of 16 of his team's points.  Sheetz was the star performer of his team for Baltic along with Lahm.  The two together scored 25 of Baltic's 35 points.

29 - Bolivar Survives Dundee Attack 25-15 (2-22-29)

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (1-0) found a fighting team in the Dundee Bulldogs (0-1) in the 3rd game of the tournament and Dundee led them a merry chase through 3 periods before Bolivar finally found itself to win by 10 points.  Headed by guard Widder the boys of Head Coach Birk spurted from a lead of 14-11 to a sure victory margin of 25-15.  At no time before the final period did the Cardinals hold that big an advantage on the Kohrmen.

The 1st quarter ended 7-4 in favor of Bolivar.  Forward Frey of Dundee caged the only points of the period for his team.  The half score stood at 11-9 with Bolivar still in front.  The Bulldogs put up a stiff fight in the 2nd quarter and Haager, Dundee guard, kept Widder, the Bolivar flash, well covered and Widder failed to score.  It was just as even in the 3rd period which found the Cardinals in front 14-11 at the end.  But, Coach Birk, who had withdrawn Widder from the game in the 3rd quarter, reinserted him in the 4th as Bolivar struck up the victory song.  Things changed considerably when Widder returned, with Bolivar spurting immediately with with forward Laughlin doing the scoring.  Frey and Haager were the outstanding players for Dundee.  Frey's uncanny shooting accounted for 12 of his squad's 15 points, while Haager caged the remainder.  Widder led Bolivar with 12 points with Laughlin and Haueter picking up 6 and 4 markers.  Kries and Shulty closed out the Cardinal scoring with 2 and 1, respectively.
