38 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Win 16th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (2-26-38)
The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' County Class B Tournament Champions, the season's most outstanding basketball team, is pictured above as it gathered around the trophy table at Memorial Hall Saturday night to claim 2 trophies and gold basketballs. Superintendent A.C. Bahler and Head Coach Earl Sundheimer are on the left, while the players without jackets are the 5 regulars.
The Baltic Eagles with their Head Coach L.P. Wartiainen stepped to the front at Memorial Hall to claim the runner-up award...the highest their school has ever received in a county tournament. The Eagles rated only fair were the tournament's surprise team, upsetting both the Bolivar Cardinals and Midvale Blue Devils in close games, but were too tired to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a hard battle in the final game.
The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Forward Marne Blick led his team by pouring in a total of 23 points (10 field goals and 3 free throws) in cruising to a 48-25 victory over the Baltic Eagles and claiming the 16th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament for their 3rd Championship since the tournament began in 1923.
Forward Don Shepfer, Captain of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' Class B Basketball Tournament Champions, is presented the winner;'s trophy by Mayor Earl S. Lieser after his team's 48-25 victory over Baltic in the finals at Memorial Hall Saturday night. Shepfer is the only veteran on the Pirates squad. The trophy was donated by The Daily Reporter.
DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' "wonder team," Baltic's upsetting Eagles and Strasburg's County League Champions were being groomed today for the Sectional Tournament here this weekend after fighting their way through the county tournament which ended at Memorial Hall on Saturday night. Of the 3 teams, the Pirates were by far the most outstanding in tournament play and then Championship 48-25 victory over the badly fatigue Baltic crew left little for the Sugarcreek-Shanesville fans to desire.
On the other hand, the Strasburg Tigers' 46-34 victory over the Midvale Blue Devils in the Consolation tournament finals kept the Tigers in the Sectional race after an upset Friday night at the hands of Sugarcreek-Shanesville.
The Sugarcreek crew, a well-balanced team with a tall center and forward and 3 little speed merchants, climaxed a season of steady improvement Friday night with a 29-25 victory over Strasburg and then coasted through Saturday night's final game. Head Coach Earl Sundheimer of Sugarcreek-Shanesville last November looked forword to a mediocre team, but found instead that he had in the making one of those unusually well-balanced clubs, which work with close precision and are practically unbeatable.
In addition to that he found a sharpshooter in forward Marne "Blick" Blickensderfer who went through the year averaging around 15 points a game and in the 4 tournament games piled up a total of 68 points, an average of 17 points a game, to beat Frank Baumholtz's 59 point total in 4 Midvale games last year.
That perhaps may be the reason Head Coach L.P. Wartiainen's Baltic Eagles, who played their hearts out Friday night to take a 30-24 victory over Bolivar's Cardinals were unable to rally again Saturday night and withstand Sugarcreek-Shanesville's fast attack.
The Baltic Eagles (2-1) (14-19) plalyed uncertain ball and missed dozens of shots as the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-0) (28-15) piled up a 14-3 lead in the 1st period...went in front 26-11 at the half and held Baltic to a lone field goal in the 3rd period to lead 36-13.
The Eagles never did get going and Dick Regula was the only player on their team to play anything near an average game. He turned in 11 points. While Baltic was desperately trying to display some of its Friday night form, Blickensderfer was potting shots for the Pirates and ended up with a grand total of 23 points and game honors. Guard Phil Hostetler followed with 5 classy field goals for 10 points.
Ken Glasgow of New Philadelphia, Ben Senniner of Gnadenhutten and Russ Stevensonof Barnhill officiated at all games during lthe tournament.

Strasburg High School Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell led his team to a 40-29 victory against the Gnadenhutten Indians canning 12 points (6 field goals).
Strasburg High School Tigers Senior Guard Charles "Babe" Reiger followed up his teammate adding another 10 points (3 field goals and 4 free throws) in downing the Indians.
DOVER - The Mighty Strasburg Tigers (3-1) (41-9), defeated Friday night by the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 29-25, led throughout the contest with the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-2) (17-19) to defeat the Warriers 40-29 in yet another Consolation contest. The victory was nailed-down with a 2nd half surge as the 1st half quarters were nick-and-tuck.
Gnadenhutten took an 8-6 lead over Strasburg in the 1st period of their game and were still leading 13-12 at the halftime intermission, but the Tigers came out after the break in play to go in front by 26-19 and continued to pour in baskets in the final stanza.

The Midvale-Bolivar game started out fast with both teams battling hard and scoring 10 points in the 1st period, but at the half, Midvale had grabbed a 20-12 advantage. 38 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Upsets Unbeaten Strasburg 29-25 (2-25-38)
The only contests on the county's Class B League Tournament program at Memorial Hall tonight will not be between the basketball teams. There will be plenty of action in the stands when the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Strasburg Tigers clash in the evening's highlight. And directing the action will be the cheerleaders. DOVER - Emerging from one of the greatest field ever enrolled in the county's Class B League Tournment, the Baltic Eagles and Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Pirates today sit at the top of the League's tournament, ready to have at it tonight in the final championship setto. Before a mob of 2,000 raving, screaming, howling fans that literally electrified them at the slaying floor, the Eagles and Pirates last night at Memorial Hall turned in a pair of upsets as great as any that ever delighted a tournament audience. Sugarcreek-Shanesville beat off its old rival Strasburg;heretofore, undefeated this season in League play and the tourney favorite by a 29-25 score. Baltic unleashed a powerful and steady attack that cut down the mighty Cardinals of Bolivar.
The losers of these 2 semi-final games went back into the Consolation brackets of the tournament here today at 1PM. Bolivar was to engage Midvale, victor over Mineral City by a 44-18 count last night and Strasburg was to mix at 2PM with Gnaden, conquerer of Tuscarawas 33-25 last night. Winners of this afternoon's games play the Consolation finals at 7:45 tonight. The scramble of Baltic and Sugarcreek-Shanesville for the tournament crown and The Daily Reporter Trophy is scheduled for 8:45PM. Trophies will be presented immediately after the game.
The Strasburg Tigers (2-1) (40-9) controlling the game completely in the 1st period, started to slip in the 2nd quarter, rallied in the 3rd stanza, but slumped again in the 4th and final period with the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-0) (27-15) taking charge, recovering the ball almost 90 percent of the time from either bankboard and finally penetrating the Tiger defense that they had been unable to pierce earlier. The Pirates already beaten twice this season by Strasburg, fell 6 points behind in the 1st period, picked up 7 of them in the 2nd, held their own in the 3rd and then opened a withering fire that swept Strasburg's defense off it's feet and carried the Pirates to their victory. Sugarcreek-Shanesville had a great deal of difficulty in hitting the hoop or even the bankboard for most of the 1st 3 quarters, but managed to stay even with the Tigers...after they caught them in the 2nd...by their hard and steady work.
The Pirates led 12-6 at the end of the 1st quarter marked by the scoring in its early minutes. The Pirates struck back in the 2nd; however, as they rallied 7 points to Strasburg's 2 markers, with the latters field goal from the pivot by Senior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell. Shortly after the 3rd period's opening, with Strasburg leading 14-13, forward Don Shepfer's 2 free throws for Sugarcreek put the Pirates in the lead. Guard Phil Hostetler dropped in another field goal, but aggressive fielders by Sophomore forward Garver Wallick and Senior guard Bob Deibel put the Tigers back into the lead and they held on to an 18-17 advantage when the period ended.
Paced by Marne Blick, All-County forward unable to hit his stride in the early sessions, the Pirates flew through the final minutes of play. Strasburg went on after the opening of the period and held a 24-21 lead. Four and a half minutes remained. Shepfer, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville forward, looped one in from the corner and was followed by Blick, who zipped his 1st one of the period from the corner to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a 25-24 lead. Haswell missed a free throw for Strasburg and Blick duplicated his previous stunt before Wallick hit one of 2 foul shots and Blick ended it with his 3rd bucket of the period.
Blick was the only Pirate in double-figures with 12 points. Shepfer followed his teammate finishing with 9 points. Haswell and Senior Charles "Babe" Reiger of Strasburg were tied with 7 points each (both with 3 field goals and a free throw).
Wild though the celebration was when the Pirates returned victoriouis, it had nothing on the ovation which greeted Baltic when the Eagles copped their triumph over the Bolivar Cardinals.
