DOVER - Before a colorful crowd of over 1,500 fans which filled Memorial Hall to capacity, the 17th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B League Tournament got under way last night with a near upset by the Bolivar Caradinals and a terrific battle by the Port Washington Purple Riders featuring the show.

The Strasburg Tigers defeated Bolivar 29-24 from the free throw line; Tuscarawas finally put on a last period rally to drop Port Washington 43-27; The Gnadenhutten Indians clicked to take the Stone Creek Panthers 39-21 and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates downed a stubborn Mineral City Tigers 40-24.

With 3 regulars not in uniform, but sitting on the bench beside Head Coach Charmis Davis who temporarily suspended them for "insubordination" the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (11-18) had a very hard time defeating the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1) (4-18).

Port, which did not win a single game the entire year in League play, stepped out in the 1st period to grab a 10-8 lead, stayed in front throughout the 2nd period, but fell behind 21-19 at the half and by 28-24 at the 3rd period.  Tusky clicked in the final period to score 15 points to Port's 3 to win the victory and a sigh of relief went up from the Broncos bench...where regulars Fred Blackstone, Les Johnson and Clarence Rolli got little thrill out of seeing their teammates pushed to the limit.

Senior forward Earl Johnson led the Broncos in scoring with 14 points and walked away with game honors; although, his teammates Senior center Bill Arthurs and Senior Bob McDonald were right behind him with 13 and 10 points, respectively.  Sophomore Jim Goettge was high for the Purple Riders with 5 classy field goals for 10 markers.

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (18-19) were very impressive and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (0-1) (4-12) were very disappointing in their game which saw the Gnaden lads easily win by a 39-21 score.  The Indians were hot, scoring from all angles, while the Panthers were completely off form, unable to dent the net, fumbling passes and throwing the ball away time after time.

Gnadenhutten led 13-3 at the end of the 1st quarter and was leading 22-6 at the half.  Stone Creek more than doubled their 1st half total, but was still down in the 3rd stanza 28-13.  The Indians outscored the Panthers in the 4th quarter 11-8.  In his 1st tournament effort this year, Senior forward Ed Lorenz, Stone Creek scoring ace, was held to only 3 field goals and a free throw by the Indian defense.

Senior forward Bob Miller led Gnadenhutten with 14 points picking up game scoring honors, while Lorenz, forward Gil Mizer and center Turner all scored 7 points each for Stone Creek.  Indian Senior center Earl Crites was also in double figures hitting 10 points.

39 - Strasburg Squeaks By Bolivar 29-24 (2-17-39)

Bolivar High School Cardinals 1939 Basketball Team.  Front:  Ken Oberlin - Russ Eberly - Justin Huth and Jim Huffman.  Back:  Head Coach Sherwood Haueter - Stan Lebold - Paul Burris and Sam Notz.  Gene Steenrod absent.

DOVER - For basketball, the Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (43-9) and the Bolivar Cardinals (0-1) (21-17), in the 2nd game last night, easily topped the show and the Champion Tigers barely came through to take the nod from the Cardinals after a hard-fought contest 29-24.  Strasburg led 7-3 at the 1st period of play, 13-7 at the half and 19-16 at the end of the 3rd stanza.  Their lead was always in danger as the speedy Red Birds threatened at every turn.

Bolivar was ahead once early in the 3rd stanza by a 16-14 count, but Strasburg rallied to take the lead at the quarter's end.  Again as the final period started the Cardinals spurted, but the Burgers got "hot" and stemmed the rush.  The Cardinals couldn't seem to click regularly, but even so they outscored the Tigers from the field 11-10.  Strasburg; however, dumped in 9 of 15 free throws, while Bolivar counted only 2 of its 8 attempts. The Red Birds were assessed 12 personal fouls and Strasburg only 7.  Senior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas had been ejected in the final period.

Senior guard Bob Dreher of Strasburg led the scoring for both teams with a total of 9 points, while Senior forward Justin Huth was high for Bolivar with 8 markers.

DOVER - The 1st game of the 1939 Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament belonged to the Sugarcreek-Shanesvilles Pirates (1-0) (29-15) and the Mineral City Tigers (0-1) (9-21).  One forward, Bob Osborne of Mineral City, proved to be a big thorne in the side of Sugarcreek-Shanesville during the 1st half of their game, but the sharpshooter was bottled up in the final half and the Pirates went on to win 40-24.  Oborne, using an unusual one-hand hook shot from way out, scored 12 points in the 1st half as the Creekers had a hard time taking a 9-8 lead at the 1st period of play and then falling behind 16-14 at the half.

But in the 3rd period, Mineral City was held to a lone field goal by guard Fred Fishley and Sugarcreek-Shanesville gathered momentum to lead 24-18 at the end of the quarter and then went on to pile up 16 points in the final stanza, while the Tigers made only 6.

Oborne of the Tigers and center Bob Becker of the Pirates were tied for scoring honors with 13 points apiece.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville's guard Junior Jones hit double figures as well with 11 markers.  Guard Ed English of Mineral City was ejected on personal fouls.

39 - 2nd Annual All-County Class B Basketball League All-Star Teams

DOVER - Seven of the 11 high school basketball teams in the Tuscarawas County Class B League are represented on The Daily Reporter's 2nd Annual All-County teams selected by the League's coaches and presented today.  Although the voting showed a scarcity of good guards in the League, it was brisk and close for most of the 5 positions on the 1st Team where 5 different schools won representation.  Two other schools won places on the 2nd Team, where again only a vote or 2 shunted some of the players from the team to Honorable Mention.

1ST TEAM

FORWARD - Ed Lorenz - Stone Creek Panthers
FORWARD - Maurice Bayer - Strasburg Tigers
CENTER - Bill Stevenson - Midvale Blue Devils
GUARD - Dick Machan - Dundee Bulldogs
GUARD - Bill Arthurs - Tuscarawas Broncos

2ND TEAM

FORWARD - Bob Miller - Gnadenhutten Indians
FORWARD - Earl Johnson - Tuscarawas Broncos
CENTER - Lloyd "Mule" Haas - Strasburg Tigers
GUARD - Blake Roush - Strasburg Tigers
GUARD - Justin Huth - Bolivar Cardinals

The 1st Team presents a pretty well-balanced combination with speed, size, shooting skill, ball handlers and floormen all having a place.  In Lorenz and Stevenson , the team has the highest scorers of the League; although, neither one of them received a unanimous vote of all the coaches which would be 10 because coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.

In fact, Dick Machan of Dundee, placed at guard, was the leading vote-getter.  Machan paced the stars with 9 of the 10 votes for 1st place and won the 10th vote for a 2nd Team berth.  Lorenz of Stone Creek ran him a close 2nd with 8 1st Team votes and the other 2 for 2nd Team honors.  Stevenson was 3rd in the balloting, winning 8 votes, Bayer next and Arthurs following close behind.

Gnadenhutten's Miller and Tusky's Earl Johnson ran the 1st stringers a hot race, but fell into the 2nd Team Division by a narrow margin.  The same was true of Bolivar's Huth.  Strasburg's Haas had little competition for the 2nd string center position.  Oddly...or not oddly...all 10 of the players winning positions were Seniors.  There were 25 boys nominated for the honors with Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Don Hershberger and Tusky's Charence Rolli setting the pace among those missing the team choices.

HONORABLE MENTION

Bolivar Cardinals - Bud Ross
Dundee Bulldogs - Victor Smith
Gnadenhutten Indians - Earl Crites
Midvale Blue Devils - Bob Baldwin and Frank Morrison
Stone Creek Panthers - Wayne Kugler and Ivan Hawk
Strasburg Tigers - Bob Dreher
Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates - Don Hershberger, Merle Smith, Bob Becker, Junior Jones and Earl Smith
Tuscarawas Broncos - Clarence Rolli and Lester Meese

Although Sugarcreek-Shanesville won the most nominations with 5, Strasburg...the League Champions...placed the most men on the teams with 3.  Tuscarawas was the only other team to win more than one place, copping one each on the 1st and 2nd fives.

Ballots voted by the coaches were counted and tabulated in the county school board offices under supervision of Superintendent W.E. Laws.

Baltic - L.P. Wortianinen
Bolivar - Sherwood Haueter
Dundee - Bob Lanzer
Gnadenhutten - Ed Sears
Midvale - M.R. Helwig
Mineral City - Darwin Davis
Port Washington - Walter J. Meade
Stone Creek - Jim C. Wilson
Strasburg - Paul M. Roby
Sugarcreek-Shanesville - Earl Sundheimer
Tuscarawas - Charmis Davis

39 - Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel)

ATHENS - One of the brightest Sopohomore stars in Ohio cage circles is little Frank Baumholtz, former Midvale Blue Devils High School cager, whose sensational scoring sprees as a member of Ohio University's Sophomore Wonder Team have been the talk of cage critics throughout the midwest.

Last night at Marietta Baumholtz hit the hoops with 10 points to bring his record for 13 games to 209 points and with 7 contests left, the former Tuscarawas County star is expected by cage experts to go over the 300 mark as he averages over 16 points a game.  In the Buckeye Conference race Frank has a wide lead over the field and may break Beanie Berens' scoring record.

Frank has been the sparkplug of a remarkable Ohio University Bobcat Team which has taken its place with the great hoop teams of the country with its new "streamlined" offense which is the fastest and most novel thing in cage circles today.  The Bobcats, with Frank leading the way have averaged close to 50 points per game and at present are leading the Buckeye Conference race with a perfect record.

Although Frank has been a big scoring gun, he has the respect of his teammates and opponents as a perfect team man.  Time and again this season he has had an open shot, but has passed the ball to a teammate who was a bit closer to the hoop.  "Frankie" is a great ball player, says Head Coach Bill Truatwein "and he'll be one of the best in the country before he's through."
