DOVER - Playing before more than 1,800 screaming fans who jammed Memorial Hall last night, the Midvale Blue Devils, Garaway Pirates and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers roared to victories in the opening round of the 36th Annual Tuscarawas County Class A Tournament.  Left behind on "heartbreak trail" of the single elimination event were the Port Washington Purple Riders, Strasburg Tigers and the Baltic Eagles, as all of the victorious teams tallied 71, 72 and the other one was 75 points.

The Pirates, which accounted for a mild surprise by sidetracking the Tigers 72-63, returns to action on Saturday night, meeting the Trojans at 7:30.  Making their debut at 8:45 will be the Gnadenhutten Indians and Tuscarawas Broncos.  As was expected the Blue Devils, the undefeated winners of the County League Crown, had little trouble in disposing of the Purple Riders 71-42.  Maintaining the victory tempo, the Golden Panthers topped the Eagles 75-67.

During the regular season, the Bengals had beaten the Spartans 56-46, but the Corsairs gained ample revenge last night.  Fans couldn't remember when the Strasburg Tigers had lost a tournament opener.  The Stone Creek-Baltic game was a "rubber" battle.  During the regular campaign the Flyers won 72-52 on its floor and the Panthers won 75-57 on its court.

The Tribesmen, which finished 2nd in the League race with a 6-2 record, enters tomorrow night's fray with 15 victories in 20 games.  Tusky, 7th in the loop, was 5-12 for the season.  Tuscarawas Valley will pit an 11-5 record against the Garaway Pirates.  The Memorial Hall doors will open at 6:30 tomorrow night.

Head Coach Ed McGlumphy's Stone Creek Golden Panthers (1-0) (5-3) (13-8) led the Baltic Eagles (0-1) (3-5) (12-9) for 3 periods, but had to stave off a late drive in the final canto.

The 1st quarter was nip and tuck with the Eagles going ahead 6- with 5:30 remaining.  The Golden Panthers took a 15-14 lead at 1:30 and was in front 17-16 as Senior center Harold Baker meshed a last-second action shot to end the period.  Baker's goal put the Panthers ahead to stay; although, their lead at times was only by one point.  The Panthers hit for 22 points, while the Flyers could only score 13 in the 2nd frame which ended 39-28.

In the 3rd stanza, the Gold and Blue increased their lead to 58-43.  Then the Baltic Eagles started a rally as the final quarter began and in 90 seconds had cut the score to 70-67.  The Cats then spurted for 5 straight points and a safe margin.  Senior forward Rod Reinhart, who averaged 23.5 points per game in the regular season, tallied 12 field goals and 9 free throws for 33 markers.  His teammate, Baker followed with 23 points and Junior Jim guard McAfee had 11.

The Orange and Black was paced by Sophomore forward John Rice's 8 floor shots and 7 free throw tosses for 25 points.  Senior guard Ron Huprich and Junior forward Sam Jacobs had 11 each and Sophomore guard Gary Gerber got 10.
