DOVER - Erratic shooting by both teams prevented the Garaway Pirates (2-0) (4-4) (12-10)-Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (0-1) (5-3) (11-6) game from being one of the better ones of the tournament, as was expected.  Both had their troubles in the 1st half, but the Pirates finally broke the contest wide open in the 3rd stanza with a 19-point outburst.  The Trojans hoop problems persisted until the final canto when it also scored 19 points.

Tusky Valley took a 2-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a jump shot by Senior guard Wayne Ruof, but there was no more scoring until 5:30 remained.  The Corsairs' Senior forward Bill Slemmer then notched a free throw.  Both squads continued to throw away easy scoring opportunities and the Plankmen led 8-7 at the end of the period.  The 2nd frame wasn't any better.  The best the Maroon and Gray could do was score 7 points, while the Spartans could only garner 5.  The Garaway Pirates led 14-13 at halftime.

Sophomore 6-0 center Chuck Stengel of the Pirates almost topped his team's total output for the 1st half when he led a 3rd quarter drive with 11 points.  The Gladiators meshed only 2 free throws, one by Ruof and the other by Junior 6-5 center Ben Price.  The score at the end of the period was 33-15.

The Red, Black and White, tallied 14 straight in the final canto before the Corsairs  could garner one and its lead was shaved to 34-29.  But the Plankmen settled down and went on to victory.  Stingel was the only Pirate to hit in double figures, scoring 20 points on 6 field goals and 8 free throw tosses.

One of the big factors in the Tusky Valley loss was Price's inability to score.  Although the tallest man on the court, he tallied but 6 points.  Teammate Ruof paced the Trojans with 14 points, while Wayne Buchanan added 10.
