DOVER - The Pirates of Garaway will play the Midvale Blue Devils (League Champions) on Thursday at 7:30 and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers will encounter the Gnadenhutten Indians at 8:45 in the semi-finals of the 36th Annual Tuscarawas County Basketball Tournament at Dover's Memorial Hall.  Winners of those 2 matches will collide Saturday night for the Tournament Championship and The Daily Reporter Trophy.  Both will advance to the Sectional Tournament, also at Memorial Hall.

Approximately 1,750 fans ignored dangerous driving conditions on Saturday night and jammed the hall for the 2nd night action in which the Pirates defeated the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans 43-34 in an erratic game and the Indians eliminated the Broncos 63-59 in a thriller.  The Trojans had decisioned the Corsairs 52-49 and 55-48 during the regular season and was slightly favored.  But Garaway gained ample revenge for those defeats just as it had done on Thursday night when it ousted the Strasburg Tigers.

The Tribesmen had whipped Tuscarawas 68-28 and 70-29 during the regular season in which it finished in 2nd place behind the Diablos in the League race.  But Tusky was an entirely different team on Saturday night, battling the Indians right down to the wire before bowing out.

The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (6-2) (15-5), which scored 2 easy wins over the Tuscarawas Broncos (0-10 (1-7) (6-12) in the regular season, had to pull out all stops to decision the Broncos on Saturday night.  Both teams played top notch basketball with the score tied on 10 different occasions.

But the Indians controlled the rebounds which was the biggest single difference.  It frequently had 5 straight shots, while Tusky had to be content with one most of the time.  Each team had its big point spree in the 1st quarter which ended 18-17 in favor of Gnaden.  The action slowed down in the 2nd frame when the Tribesmen boosted its margin to 31-29 by outscoring the Riders 13 to 12.

The Blue and White's center Junior Tom Vesco, left the contest with a sprained ankle with 3 minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter.  Vesco returned to the game at the start of the 3rd stanza and the Tusky Broncos went ahead 33-31 in the 1st minute as Sophomore guard Chuck McCahill scored 2 straight field goals.  But the Scarlet and Gray tied it up and went ahead on 2 jump shots by Junior forward Ron Bradley and a free throw by Senior center Tom Roth.

The Gnadenhutten Indians stayed in the lead until about 30 seconds remained in the quarter when Junior forward Dick Robinson tied the contest at 45-45 on a free throw toss.  However, the Indians' Roth tallied on a hook shot seconds later to give the Tribesmen a 47-45 period edge.  In the final canto Gnaden spurted to a lead of 61-53 with 2:25 remaining.  Then the Broncos started a rally which netted them 6 straight points and cut the Scarlet and Gray's lead to 61-59.

The Gnaden Indians went into a stall at that point and in an attempt to gain possession Tusky had to foul Indian ball handlers and Senior guard Larry Clark hit on 2 charity tosses.  Clark paced the Indians' attack with 23 points, while Bradley had 16, Senior guard Ed Shull 11 and Roth 10.  The Riders were paced by Vesco, who hit for 18 points.  Sophomores Clarence Eckhardt and Gary Caviness were next with 13 and 11 respectively and Robinson added 10.
